topic Has anybody ever had their Barclay's Aviator card cloned? in Credit Cards

Between my partner and I, we have about 30 credit cards. I check them all at least weekly and those we use regularly daily. Today I checked his Barclay's Aviator red card and there was a cash advance for $63 and a $10 cash advance fee. The transaction occurred at Harborstone Credit Union, a smaller credit union here in Seattle.

I have one of those little books that holds like 50 cards (stacked three high) and that card was in that wallet. Neither of us ever does cash advances on credit cards and certainly not for $63. I also realized that this could not have been an ATM transaction because they do not deal with one-dollar increments (typically $20 increments).

This transaction was done on 9/10 and I would have thought that somebody who managed to get a small transaction through would go for broke on this card. It has a $40K limit ($7.5K cash advance limit) and a zero balance.

Any thoughts? I canceled the card and disputed the transaction but I am perplexed. This is so freakin' bizarre.

I don't think the issue is specific to the Aviator card per se. I've had my share of other cards go through similar situations. Heck, 2 of the cards that were compromised not long ago (Chase & Citi) were used in Hong Kong and South America. It happens.

OP your Aviator card isn’t special, it has one of the 16-digit credit card numbers, with a three digit code on the back. There are many pathways for scammers to get to particular credit cards to perpetrate fraud.

With a $40k limit, the card has been used in the past, no?

Did you close the account because you no longer need the American Airlines perks, or only because of the potential fraud item?

Oh if I said I closed it I misspoke. I meant that card number. They are sending a replacement card.

Could have been an ATM with a $3 fee? But if it wasn't you, best to have them send you a new card. Numbers get stolen sometimes

This is precisely why credit cards are recommended over debit cards for security. The small probing transaction validates the card number works. Closing off that card number is your reset from that potential larger fraud.

There are three kinds of people:
Those who have had credit cards compromised,

Those who will,

And those who will again.
