Capital One Fraud?

Hi all! New here but I’ve been ghosting the forums for awhile. I’ve had a hell of s time with Capital One today which has prompted making this username, wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience.

I currently have two accounts with them - in the middle of September I applied for a Quicksilver card (I’m rebuilding) and at the time of application they sent an email requesting copies of my DL and SS card. Okay, kind of weird, but I sent them back and they emailed a few days later saying I was approved and my card was on the way! Awesome!

Fast forward to today - I have never been able to link the QS card in the app and I’m sure I’ve got a payment coming due, so I call customer service. The rep I speak with puts me on hold and comes back and said she transferred me to the fraud department.... oh.... Kay? The fraud department lady said I needed to provide (again) a copy of my drivers license, sscard and now a letter requesting the SS change. Ok.... I explained to her I did all this when I applied and she says they have to have it again. So I send it, they said it’d be 7-10 days and I’d hear back. Cool.

I get a call back and here’s what I’m told - my info doesn’t match, they’re restricting my account and if I wanted another card I’d have to reapply with the correct info. Mind you, I’ve used this card! I provided my personal info TWICE! If they suspected fraud why didn’t they call me when I applied??? They said my card was reporting to someone else’s bureau and they gave to open an investigation through the credit bureau and it’s just a huge mess. They can’t even tell me the balance on the card or when a payment is due only to keep paying until I receive a check in the mail for an overage???

Has anyone else had a similar issue with capital one like this?? Zero issues whatsoever on my other two accounts. I just don’t get it.

Sometimes banks mess up and issue the same # to more than one person. If there's an issue why not head to a branch in person and get it sorted out?

I had a similar issue with Sync awhile back where I don't recall exactly what happened but they reissued a new card / # in response to someone else having the same info.

just try to keep a level head while dealing with the bureaucracy that is banking and it should get resolved with a new card in hand eventually.

Thanks for the replies. I monitor my credit pretty faithfully. My fiancé is a loan consultant so she’s pretty on top of our reports. I guess my issue is when I spoke with them they acted like I did something wrong. If my info didn’t match what I provided why did they issue me the card? I feel like I’m being punished for their mistake I guess. My other two accounts have zero issues what so ever and I’m afraid this will affect them as well. I just don’t know if I need to let it be or if there’s someone else I should contact.

Correct - it did not ever report to my CB but mind you I only applied September 13th, received approval on the 23rd (after I sent them pictures of my DL and SS card) so the card is still relatively new and I didn’t see cause for alarm because I hadn’t seen it report to mine yet. I made a payment with one of the reps I talked to yesterday but they’re telling me that because the account is permanently restricted no one can tell me balance, minimum due, etc - the best they can advise is to call and make payments until I receive an overage check in the mail. It was only a $300 CL and I definitely did not use that much, it’s just extremely frustrating. The whole situation doesn’t make sense.

Thank you all for your input.

I understand entirely. I finally got someone in public relations to call me back today. They confirmed for me that the social security number I entered on my application was off. The only part that frustrates me is I’m assuming their system caught the error in the number I entered and asked me to provide a picture of my drivers license and social security card so they could review manually, before the application was ever approved. Which I did! I would’ve assumed a living breathing person would have cross-referenced the pictures I provided with what was on the application but I guess not? Not sure. Either way, they’ve permanently restricted that card and gave me the balance on the account today so I’ll just pay it off, cut my losses and move on. But I’m telling you I had to just about email Jesus Christ himself to get anyone to tell me anything about the account. It was a chore.

I really appreciate everyone’s input on this. I’m new to this credit game, not sure what is normal/odd/par for the course, ya know? Thanks again.

Stay with me here a bit:

1-Consumer app's with SS number that one number off so it matches someone else. Meaning name and SS do not match but matches someone else.

2-When asked for verification consumer sends in SS card that does not match app SS nor app Name

3-card shutdown

I'm sorry but the card/account is dead. Try to recall approximately how much you owe. Just go day by day and add it up. Its a $300 limit so there cannot be that many transactions. Toss an extra $50 on the amount you think you owe just to be certain. Pay it. This will save you from this showing up on your report as late which will cost you more time to remove if you can even get it removed. Its worth the money just to prevent this imho. That should close this chapter. If you're still interested in the card wait a few months and reapply.

Seriously...where are you guys getting the idea that the OP applied to Capital One with a modified/changed name? He claims that he mistakenly transposed digits in his social security number when applying, but made no mention of a name change.

OP, when applying its quite important to ensure YOU enter the correct information on the application and triple-check it if necessary.

@Anonymous wrote:

Thats not how I interpreted the comments. Speaking for myself, I never said he applied with a modified name or name change. I said the altered SS number matched someone else. If you use a number that is one off, that number will most likely match someone else's name. Uintentional, but nevertheless. That is the only reason I mentioned "name" at all.

Credit Card numbers are specifically constructed so that one number change should not produce a valid number. SS numbers have no such checksum. They were given out in numeric order for a long time. I have cousins who are sisters one number off from each other, for example.
