Hi All,

First time poster here. I have been reading a lot of the forums lately as I am looking to apply for a DELTA AMEX. Do I start with Delta Gold or can I dive in with Platinum or Reserve? My scores are 759TU, 671EQUIFAX (which should jump up here shortly and then I will apply). I am only an authorized user on Cards(3 to be exact all sititng at 1% usage $53 out of $7650), but have an AUTO, SL and Mortgage of my own. All in good standing! This summer I had 2 accounts in collections that I paid off and consolidated the SL, and the credit scores have been going up and up. Or should I wait longer for better approval odds? I have 8 inquieries in the last 2 years.

Sounds like scores from Credit Karma. OP, you can disregard those completely. Go to Discover Scorecard and get your EX FICO score. That’s what Amex uses 99% of the time. Reply with that and the info requested above and we can likely help you better.

+1 your Experian FICO 08 score is the only one that will matter to Amex. You can certainly jump right in with Platinum or Reserve as long as your profile and income support them. Go for the card that serves you best and be sure to get the best Welcome Offer you can as they are once in a lifetime.

Any tier could be supported by any salary - it comes down to responsible spending. Amex feels your profile supports Plat or Gold, and prequals with them typically are solid. Their risk is lessened on a charge card because it’s due in full each month, and purchases are approved/denied in real time. Getting one and running it responsibly likely will open doors to revolvers with them. Assess your spend accurately to pick the right one. Plat is a heavy travel card and Gold is a daily driver.

Delta and Hilton cards are good ways in, however in post 8 OP stated prequal for Plat and Gold. OP, if you app and are denied, app immediately for a cobranded revolver if one fits your lifestyle - you may well be given one and possibly on the same HP as well.

Excellent and congrats! A revolver is a “credit card” in that you charge and have a minimum payment that’s required, but you can carry a balance. Your Delta is one - you could charge $260, have a min payment of $39, pay that by the due date, and you’re good to go. All the cobranded cards and the core cards are revolvers. You can “revolve” a balance on the card rather than being required to pay in full each month.

Green, Gold, and Platinum are charge cards, where the full balance is due at the end of the month. Charge $260, and you’ll owe the full $260 on the due date. There are exceptions to it but that’s the gist of it.
