The SUB is great. If you spend the required $4k in the first 3 months you will have a minimum of $580.00 that can be pure cash back. As for categories there are several including RV parks etc. Being NAVY they exclude marinas for some reason. The Wife and I both have Flagships, I have had mine for 11 months while she has has hers for 3 months. We have a combined $2k in cashback so far between the two. That kind of earn will take care of the $49 fee X2 easily... obviously.

Hey everybody,

So I've been thinking about the Flagship rewards card and I'm just curious what exactly codes as travel for it. I've seen online people mentioning that it's quite a broad category, but I was wondering if anybody has and DP on more specific categories. Somebody mentioned Amusement Parks counted for it, and I'm in the talks of buying an Annual Pass to Disney, so 3% back is a pretty decent amount for that.

It comes with a $500 sign up bonus. That will be a lot more than an additional percent on Disney tickets.

I wouldn't really get it just for an extra 1% on what is basically a one-off purchase, but as mentioned, the SUB can make it worth it.

I have been lurking for a few months and I have really enjoyed reading your posts. I think I've gained a lot of value from your shared knowlegde including a credit limit increase on my Amazon Prime Store card. I have never requested a credit limit increase before as my increases have always been automatic, but the button was easy.

Back to the topic and OP:

I joined Navy and opened some savings accounts after reading about them here. I do not apply for cards very often (1/24) but the Flagship will probably be my next card. I was considering NFCU's lower interest rates and higher credit limits as additional benefits of the card, with the $50 minimum redemtion as the only real negative. Also the NFCU card has no foreign transaction fees. I also read that NFCU credit card cash advances have very low fees, if anyone is interested in that feature. I also know from personal experience that Navy has wonderful phone support if that matters to anyone reading along.

It’s honestly all in how you use it. I’ve had it for a while and whenever we take vacations it’s the only card I use. Amusement parks, tolls, parking garages, anything related to transportation expenses, hotels car rentals just to name a few is what counts towards the travel 3X for points.

Now that I’m NFCU member, this will likely be my next card. We never fly, so the 3% for travel is perfect for us for lodging, attractions, and amusement parks since we have no use for miles, abd the fact that it is a 2% card makes it very useful.

It's a great card and great CU! Plus think of it like this, the $500 SUB knocks out the AF for 10 years :-)

I travel a bit, but it also gives me a 2% back Visa. I can justify the $49 annual fee, and I don't have a specific airline to fly with, nor do I spend enough to get a card with a $450 annual fee.

The card only makes sense if you can get a net positive after the AF versus any other 2% card that doesn't have one.

or if NFCU is your only real option for a larger limit real 2% card.

Anyone that can get approved for the Flagship shouldn't have a problem getting the PayPal Cashback unless they burned Synchrony.

As a general rule perhaps but I got an $8k Flagship with a 590 TU FICO and my Wife got her $20k FS with a 640 TU FICO. Both had $500 SUBs. The PPMC could start as $300 and grow to a large CL over a year or so though... even if you did burn SyncB in the past after they let you in again.

Hey @spiritcraft1, I notice from your signature block that you have both the NFCU Go Rewards and the NFCU More Rewards cards. What does the Go Rewards card give you that isn't also available from the More Rewards card? Both have 3% dining, but the More Rewards also has 3% groceries, gas, and transit, all of which are only 1% or 2% on Go Rewards. I'm asking because I've had the Go Rewards for many years. It's gathering dust in my sock drawer, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.

Right now the NFCU cards are offering BTs instead of SUBs. I think I read that in March? that will typically change back to the SUB? Is that correct?

I have no need for a BT, so I’ll definitely wait on the SUBs to come back.

I'm waiting for those signup bonuses to return, too. I've spent the last three years in a steady state, neither adding nor closing credit cards. The recently announced fee hike on the Chase Sapphire Reserve was a wakeup call and has made me realize that I need to start managing my card collection more actively. I was asleep at the switch when NFCU upgraded the Flagship Rewards in 2018 and the More Rewards in 2019. Suddenly both cards seem useful to me now that they have been revamped. I already have two NFCU cards (Cash Rewards and Go Rewards), so I'll have to close at least one to make room for the new cards under the NFCU limit of three cards to a customer. Once I have the Flagship Rewards and More Rewards, I should be able to get 3% cash back on Travel, Dining, Groceries, Gas, and Transit. I won't even miss my Chase Sapphire Reserve.
