Pre-qualified for the AAA mastercard.

Something don't sound right here. I was on the phone with AAA this morning updating some info and it said it popped up on their screen that I pre-qualified for their AAA MC, which is issued through BOA.

My EX Fico is 594, so that seems rather like a ITA than a pre-qualifcation.

Correct. Unless they provided a solid APR and you were able to confirm any pre-screened language for the offer through the agent.

Lol. I called back and they said the previous agent was misinformed and it was "just an offer" and not a pre-qual.

Would have wasted an Inq for nothing.

It's a good thing you weren't pre-qual for it because the AAA card products seem kinda meh anyway. The Dollars Gas Rebate card looks like the best one with 5% on gas station purchases but "capped at 2% of your total monthly purchases".

Just FYI, depending on where you live (or rather, which AAA club you're a member of) the bank handling the AAA credit card and the card offering itself can be different.

Some AAA clubs offer the AAA MasterCard issued by U.S. Bank; I think this is what you're referring to here... U.S. Bank offers the card in three 'flavors': Dollars, Dollars Plus, and Dollars Gas Rebate.

Other AAA clubs offer the AAA Visa issued by Bank of America. This card comes in only one 'flavor', and is 3x travel/AAA purchases, 2x gas, grocery, wholesale and drugstore purchases, and 1x on everything else.

(FWIW, I've never heard of an AAA CSR being able to offer a credit card prequal regardless of which bank's products their club offers.)

I remember having this talk with someone on here that had the USB AAA Card (while I have the BoA AAA Visa) and we were both a little confused LOL.... IMO, The BoA card is good for a few reasons..

No AF/FTF

2% at Costco and Costco gas

2% at pretty much any pharmacy (including Kaiser)

Once your scores are in the 700's with no derogs and your income justifies it, your CL can grow like wildfire with SP's!

I don't believe this card is geo restricted anymore than any other BoA card product. In fact, BoA's application page states...

"How do I switch from my current AAA credit card to the AAA Member Rewards Visa card? +

Switching is easy. Simply call 1-800-807-3068, 24 hours a day, seven days a week"

(How this works out with swapping from USB to BoA, I couldn't tell you... I would think it would require a new app/HP.)

I think all this is referring to is that BoA has issued AAA cards for many years and some users still have older AAA cards with lesser rewards (1% on everything, etc). If you have a BoA issued AAA card that is not the current "Member Rewards" type, they're saying you can upgrade to that.

I do think the BoA vs US Bank thing is geo-dependent and restricted. I don't believe you have an option.

Regarding the current AAA card, as others have said, it's basically just a "meh" or "okay" rewards card nothing super special. 2x categories are pretty much meaningless in the age of 2% on everything cards. The BoA card is a Visa so at least you can use it at Costco and get 2% if for some reason you don't have/want the Citi card.
