A Reason Why Discover Should Be In Your Card Collection

In October 2018 I was approved for a Discover It Chrome. At the time, my fico was 681 and I was given a surprising $10K limit. The only other cards I had then was a Credit One (450 limit) and a Capital One Platinum ($1,500 limit) always paid on time. Two weeks after receiving the Chrome, I needed a car as my old one gave out. So, I bought a car for $4,200 on the Chrome. Afraid of high utilization, I called Discover and told a rep I was nervous about being over 30% UTL and I was going to make $100 monthly payments instead of $78. The rep told me not to worry as future monthly payments will drop my UTL. Well, 2 weeks after that call, I was auto given a $2K CLI, avail credit became $12K. UTL was just under 30%. The following month, I won $5k at a casino and paid off the card. 4 months later, my replacemnt car was totaled and I had to buy another car. I put $4,500 on the Chrome. Again making monthly $100 payments and paid it off this past November from selling stuff on Craigslist. Discover auto CLI me to $14K on December 28th.

Unfortunately last week, my wife died suddenly and I needed to pay funeral costs. I was short $15K. I called Discover to ask if there was some way I could get a $2K CLI putting me at $16K to cover the remaining cost of the funeral. In 30 seconds or so, the rep said sure that it would immediately be reflected in my account for use. I expect to get insurance money later that will pay off most of the $15K, but the funeral is this saturday and the bill had to be paid. Discover came through for me.

I'm so sorry for the sudden unexpected loss of your wife. That must have been very difficult.

I appreciate having Discover in my corner too. I'm glad that they could be there for you when you needed them. Thanks for sharing that story. It's a nice testimonial and I'm sure they will always have a special place in your wallet now.

Discover is top tier when it comes to customer service. Every time I've called them in the past 15 years, they have been very friendly and helpful. They have 100% U.S.-based customer service, which helps them be relatable to other Americans. That said, you need to give yourself some credit too. Banks do not typically extend credit based on how much someone tells them they need it--they base it off of a number of factors that amount to the customer using his or her credit responsibly. In your case, it sounds like you've made some solid decisions with your credit profile and you were rewarded with those multiple CLIs. Very good job!

On a personal note, I cannot imagine how you are feeling as the result of your wife's passing. I hope you have a good foundation of support from your family, friends, or another group you're involved with. Best wishes.

So sorry for your loss. I enjoy Discover too. I started with 11.5k and they have automatically increased me to 16.5k. I'm sure I could call and request a higher limit if needed.
