BBVA Clear Points Card

Making my first post, but recently I've been getting mailers from BBVA about this credit card. I've researched it some and found people noting that you have to reside in one of a few certain states to be eligible for the card. Needless to say I don't live in one of the listed states, but then I received a mailer? Why would BBVA send me a mailer if I don't live in a required state or have they gotten lax with that requirement? Anyone have any experience with this or have the card not being a resident of the required states? Thanks ahead!

Hi @HankH, and welcome to myFICO!

Getting a mailer from BBVA is the one way to bypass the requirement of having to live in their footprint. I have the ClearPoints Visa myself, and it's always been solid.

I can’t answer your question because I live in a state that is in the geofence, but I can say I love the card. IDK if will let you check because you are not in state, but if it will let you do the prequal, it will show you the SL and APR before you actually apply.

If you got a mailer sent to your current address you're good to go. BBVA does target individuals outside their normal footprint with the Clearpoints card, it's how I got mine.

When BBVA sends you a mailer, you are pretty much good to go!

Interesting. They sent me one yesterday as well. Not really sure what I would use the card for, but definitely interesting that they have a pretty set preapproval mailer. Gardening will win for me. I don't really need more lines right now.

Tried this in Colorado where I have a branch maybe 15 minutes from me and the pre-qual said the "product isn't available in this state" very strange.

I keep buying things here and there outside of the normal 3% and 2% to see how things code. I’ve a had a few things that coded odd. I am currently using the 3% for utilities and 2% for restaurants this quarter. I got a bonus category for groceries for January that pays an additional 4% on top of the 2%, so for this month we are getting 6% at restaurants. I usually have 2% set as retail, which I’m finding is a broad category.
My eventual plan is to get a US Bank Cash + for 5% utilities and phone service and swap the 3% on the ClearPoints card to retail and get 3% at most retail stores like WalMart, Target, Dollar General, etc and a lot of Amazon and eBay purchases.

$100 SUB for $1.5K spend/90 days, No AF, can give decent SL, 3% cashback in a category of your choosing each quarter. Does have a 3% FTF. It's a Visa Platinum-level card, there is no Signature variant.

While not a unicorn its a reasonably solid card.

Is BBVA inquiry sensitive?

It is my goal card and I just received a mailer with a bonus of $100 after I make $500 qualifying purchases and it sounds like a good deal.

But I have 3 inquiries on Experian (none on EQ or TU), and I wonder if that is too many for BBVA?

This is a YMMV area, although I had a LOT more than 3 scoreable when I was preapproved/approved.

Interesting. I assume I will probably see another one sometime as I thnk I recycled mine earlier. Didn't realize this was a rare thing. I too ran into the geofence when trying the prequal.

I would assume it's just a prequal bug? I feel like I could easily run to the branch near me and apply but doubt I could do a prequal in person.

You should be fine applying in-branch. I can't put my finger on the post, but IIRC someone posted a while back that BBVA can check for prequals in-branch as well (although for unknown reasons it didn't work for the person who made the post).

I used the prequal tool awhile back and I believe it only works for AL, TX, and I think FL.

I kinda like this as an every day carry card where you get to select your 3 and 2% categories. Received about eight of these mailers since last spring or so but have held off as I have been eyeing the PNC Cash Rewards as an every day card also.

I just got another mailer today. Willing to guess that BBVA continues it's mailers given that SunTrust has merged into BBandT - aka Truist. (In Florida where both BBVA and Truist have branches.)

I use this card for 3% utilities, 2% retail in conjunction with the PNC Cash Rewards 4% gas, 3% restaurants, AMEX BCP 6% groceries, Disco 5% rotating, and PayPal Mastercard flat 2% for everything else. The ClearPoints and the PNC card's rewards post very quickly, and the BBVA online site and phone app are nice. I like the ClearPoints so much that I'm considering getting the BBVA Rewards 2% flat card later to replace the PPMC unless I can secure one of the 2.5% flat cards. I was prequalified for both before I applied. I think I have to wait 6 months after I got the ClearPoints card to get another BBVA card
