Daily cash back - per day or 24 hours?

My Discover and Walmart cards offer cash back when making purchases. I can get $100 from Walmart and $120 from Discover per day. But it is a calendar day or is it in 24 hours? I've had Discover denyed on the second day but work the next so I'm thinking they might look at it as 24 hours.

Better just to wait 24 hours, that way there is no confusion on a day or 24 hours (day)

I believe its once per 24 hours. But given the current climate, if you haven't used it regularly and now start to use it often or everyday, that could bring attention to your account.

Good info! Thanks! I was going in the evening so I guess I sometimes was there earlier than 24 hours. Today I went in the morning so now it can be daily for awhile. Just putting some extra cash aside incase it's needed.

Considering they still charge the standard interest rate on it, I'd rather just go to the ATM for cash if I need it.

That said, it can be convienant to just get $20-50 right there just to have it on hand. I've only done a couple times with both lenders.

But since I like to PIF I'm not sure of the benefit, it's not like you can get $100 every 24.2 hours and stockpile it. At some point very soon you gotta pay it back, or pay the piper.

Well actually, you can! I usually PIF too but with the current economic situation, it will be nice to have a little extra cash on hand for a couple of months. My statesments just closed so I won't be due to pay it back for 2 months anyway.

I came across something interesting today. Neither by Walmart or Discover cards gave me the option to get quick cash. I usually asks if I want cash back. Then I select yes or no. If yes, I select the amount. Today, I inserted the cards then it processes the transation without asking. First with Walmart then Discover. I tried it at two registers at two Walmarts. The same result each time. It's been over 24 hours since I last got cash.

I've noticed Walmart being low on cash these days. Try a non-Walmart store that receives less traffic.

I've had that same experience a couple years back and didn't really understand it, just assumed that it was a new feature that hadn't quite rolled out to every store yet. I mostly use the Walmart card online due to not having a local store, but there have been an instances when it did not prompt for cash back at times when I was actually at a store. So i don't really know the process that well.

It does seem that in some instances that I actually want to take advantage of the feature it's unavailable. lol

I think Walmart might have stopped allowing cash back. Maybe for the weekend? I tried my local Walmart a little while ago. The charges just went through without asking if I wanted any money. This was for my Walmart and Discover cards. I then used my Discover card at Dollar General. I was able to get cash back.

Maybe until further notice. Cash is considered dirty and involves transfer of germs. The gloves only protect the cashier.

That actually makes sense, and would be a good idea if every store didi so. Money is the #1 germ spreader IMO, it's the one surfcae we all touch repeatedly. Other surfaces were consciously aware of and try to avoid, but there are always going to be ome who still use cash.

And being in retail for several years, it seems like it's alwasy the sick people who like to hand over cash to pay...

I've been a proponent to replace paper Money for years for that simple reason.

Following up - I tried my Walmart and Discover cards at my local Walmart yesterday. Still no option to get cash. I then spoke to someone at customer service just incase they heard something about this. She told me it might because of the dollar amount. It might just approve the charge and have it go through if it's under a certain amount. Looking at past charges when I got cash back, some were for 40 cents so I knw she didn't have a good answer.

Be very careful doing this. Someone taking cash every day who normally doesn't is a good way to get their attention.

A lot of stores are reducing the amount of things that you have to touch on the credit card reader to attempt to reduce possible exposure to Covid-19. Debit cards that have a Visa or MC logo are being ran automatically as credit instead of debit at some stores so that PIN numbers don't have to be put in. My store stopped having surveys on the card reader at the end of the transaction, and now that you mention it, I don't recall seeing the option for cashback the last time that I used my Discover card. The option should still appear on the cashier side if you ask them for cashback before they've hit the amount to process. That is, unless as someone else suggested, the store policy changed to not allow cashback for cleanliness reasons. Just a theory, as I haven't tried it at Walmart.. but that may be a reason why it used to work but doesn't work at the moment.

I haven't been to Walmart is a few days. I stopped by to grab a few things today. Was rung out at a register. I asked the girl about getting cash back but she just gave me generaic answers. Same with the supervistor that was next to her. First I tried my Walmart card and then one of my Discover cards. No option for cash back for either one.

I think this is more for COVID-19 reasons than anything else. Cash is dirty. So many people are touching it as it circulates. Obviously, the less we handle it right now, the better.

If you can avoid using cash at all I think this would be a great time to do so.
