One site has their terms and conditions (for one of their cards anyway) that includes:

Monthly Account Maintenance Fee

$3 per month on closed accounts with an outstanding balance of $20 or more.

So I assume the "justification" is that you still have an account with them that they have to process (making sure you are paying down the balance) so they can charge a maintenance fee for that, even though the credit card itself is no longer open.

So close when you are able, and heed the warning of Remedios and make sure other fees don't magically appear post-closure ("Anniversary of closing fee: $10" perhaps!)

Hi

I received a first premier credit card to rebuild my credit. I missed 1 payment because i set up my bill payments to be withdrawn directly from my checking acct. However i thought i had theirs set up but wasnt. i did make my payment although it was late. However they closed my acct because of it. I spoke to a rep there and was told my acct will be reopened once the payment reflects on my acct. I have never been late since. However 6 months later they have not reopened my acct but they're still charging me monthly fees. My question, Can they charge me a monthly fee on a closed acct? I have been making ontime payments so i can pay it off. With only $124.00 remaining. They're reporting on my report as closed with ontime payments.

When you close the account after it's paid in full, ask for a letter, IN WRITING, showing as such. File this letter away with this year's taxes so you have it on hand for several years as proof, just in case they try to pull some shady poop.

yea get better CC and close with them. I had a card with them before and it expired with $20 to $45 dollars in it. A few months later they were asking for like $245 dollars. I was like good luck, lmao. Seriously with their fees and all, they make creditone bank look like a legit credit card company.
