The only co-branded amex has are Delta, Marriott, and Hilton. Unless you count the different platinums. What you listed are cards that use the amex payment network.

My new reflection: Those cards are co-branded (or third part) American Express store credit cards, because are store cards with 2 brands, including American Express.

No, they aren't Amex store cards. Those cards are underwritten by other banks. The only connection they have with Amex is using the Amex payment network like Brian said. Amex has nothing to do with their backing or underwriting.

The cards have two downsides, really...

1. You face lower merchant acceptance than Visa or MC.

2. You don't get the superior service and protections of cards issued by American Express (though one could argue that the differences between some no or low-AF Amex-issued cards those from NFCU or WF aren't very significant).

They aren't Amex store card, but they are co-branded Amex store cards or third part Amex store card.

You're not listening. Amex cobranded cards like Hilton, Marriott, and Delta, are cards that are issued by American Express and underwritten by Amex banking. Those are the only ones that are.

Macy's and the like are not underwritten by Amex, nor issued by Amex, and therefore are not cobranded Amex cards. They only operate on the Amex payment network. Example - the NFCU "Amex" card is an NFCU product, issued and backed by Navy. It uses the Amex network. The Macy's "Amex" is underwritten and backed by DSNB (Department Stores National Bank), not Amex. Again, it only runs on the Amex network. That's the end of the tie-in, period.

But define it how you want if it makes you happy.

What exactly is it you find special about the Amex network? The most appealing features (customer protections and service) are from Amex the issuer, not Amex the network.

The difference between the old Costco Amex and a Dillards Amex is that only the former was actually issued by Amex. The latter only uses the network.
