I've never had Green.

Good:

While not every airport has CLEAR, there is certainly some value there. I don't get Pre-Check every time I fly (generally when I'm on a seldom-used airline like Alaska).

A fairly broad definition of travel...not sure about dining.

Mixed:

3x is fairly good, but I already get 2x (capped) with BBP. I see more marginal value in BofA Premium where I get a 3.5%/2.625% no-FTF Visa with broader acceptance. Or I could use Hyatt with its narrower bonus categories or potentially go back to CSR.

A $100 lounge credit might not give you $100 of enjoyment. A lot of lounges require status, a particular class of ticket, a particular credit card, or just aren't in the LoungeBuddy network. For instance, AA Admirals Club locations do sell day passes, but aren't in the LoungeBuddy network for purchase. LoungeBuddy does include many if not all Escape locations. Those are comfortable, often quiet, and the complimentary food is fairly good. However, at $40+ per person per visit, the credit only covers two person-visits per year. I like Escape, but a lot of what I like is unlimited visits...each with 2 free guests via Amex Platinum.

I like and use mine. I had the Gold but it didn't work for me no matter how great 4x is. I live in rural northern AZ and none of the restaurants that trigger the dining credit are up here. We do have Doordash but not Grubhub or Uber Eats. It is also nearly impossible for me to use that travel credit without doing serious work. I don't think I should have to do that. So for me the Gold looked good on paper but the annual fee was higher than I could recover even with 4x.

I did use the Clear credit on my Green and will use the lounge credits making the annual fee a wash. In return in I get 3x and an actual travel card. I pair it with my EDP and get better value than I would with the Gold. Everyone's situation varies. Just because one thing works for one person doesn't mean someone else is wrong in wondering if that will work for them.

@Anonymous Good or not good will be dependent on your spend. If you don't spend enough in either of those categories (same logic applied to any annual fee card) then it'll never be worth it regardless of what the multipliers are.

Like the Amex Gold...it offers 4x on dining and grocery stores and 3x on airfare but for nothing else in the name of travel. So if you're one to needs an expanded travel category and your other spending is on dining then there's an argument that can be made that the Green is better.

For me, the Green will never be a winner for my purpose as I purchase a fair amount of fuel for my gas guzzling sedan and my wife's SUV...so I stick with my Citi Premier as it covers just about anything you can think of in regards to travel...from airfare to public parking, hotels, and trains. All bases covered. Sucky park is I hate Citi's transfer partners so most of my TYPs gets used through their portal.

As you know, in this space it's all about running the numbers in the categories that you spend the most.

The annual fee is 159. It went up and I have the decide is it worth keeping another year. Past spending was insane the first years but the this year not so much. Look at your yearly spend and what other cards you have. It they arent covering the fees, dont apply.

I've been thinking about getting this card for a while. I like that they have lounge buddy in the major cities of the US and also international. And same for clear but it's only in the US. For that, it covers the $100 automatically, so you'll be paying $20 out of pocket. If you manage to use the loungebuddy I'd say it's like $80-$90, so the card itself they might be paying you $10-20 just to keep the card after all the credits are due.

Just wanted to know, there's been times where I had a 2hr layover, is the lounges better for sitting and dining? Is the seats comfortable like sitting on a sofa or gaming chair? Is the food free or expensive just as if you were buying the food from the airport? I heard the clear is really good, fast.

Say that I travel outside of the US, and using the amex green. Since it is contactless, the merchants would accept it? Thanks.

I have it.

its cool but I don't use it that much now since my Altitude Reserve gets 3x dining through the rest of the year. I know Green gets 3x MRs, I honestly just prefer the guaranteed 1.5c a point I'm going to get with the AR.

I'm probably going to upgrade back to the Gold when my year is up in October. I don't really care if they offer an upgrade bonus although it would be nice.

i used the clear credit but I doubt I'll ever use to lounge buddy credit which makes this card a net 50$ AF for me. Gold would be net 30$ AF as I can use all of its credits a little easier.

All in all its not a bad card, I really just got it for the SUB with zero intentions of keeping it long term.

I've only had the AMEX Green for a month and I've already saved $32.68 with AMEX offers.

At $150 AF you can probably cover it with offers fairly easily.

@TheBoondocks wrote:

Thanks.

I have the Green. I actually prefer Green + Gold for earning over Platinum: I am now covered for 3x on all hotels + car rentals + Lyft + trains, busses or ferries. I'll happily trade 2x on flights and some lounge access and lower annual fees for that, especially since I can get some of that back with a Hilton AMEX and STILL save money overall.

(I actually don't value lounge access that much even.)

I actually like the discounted CLEAR membership better as a Green benefit...

Gold fits my spend. In 4 months I've already earned more than enough MRs to offset the fee, not including the dining credits I get every month. I'll get the Schwab Platinum in time. I really have no motivation to get green. Had it been gas and entertainment, it would have been a no-brainer for me.

The Green is a very good basic travel card.
Lounges in general are a step up from sitting in the bus-terminal that is the airport, and so if you aren't familiar with the loung experience, the Green is an inexpensive way to get a few accesses. The food tends to be light, but the possibility to sit at a table and relax is a nice feature.

The MR SUB is a nice boost as well.
