(Edit: I was talking about the CLI but just realized you may have been speaking to OP's title. LOL In that case, yeah exceeding the CL probably not a good idea, although I doubt they allow it anyway. I've read too many "don't do that perfectly normal consumer behavior because the sky is falling and tomorrow no one on earth will have credit cards" posts today.)

Mine is currently negative after a payment and refund so I could technically charge over my limit. 😬

i used to work for synchrony and they do not let you charge over your limit. let's say you have a $20 credit and a $200 limit, they will not approve a purchase for $220. i have seen many card users angrily try and fail. synchrony will not approve a transaction over your credit limit even if it's by a dollar. you'll just have to eat up the credit with purchases or they'll send you a refund check.

Probably yes. The computer algorithms are set up as a corporate risk control mechanism. These banks are constantly being probed with scams, so they have to set the algorithm to prevent known scams... like overpay to generate a credit ( or claim a return to a merchant ). Such a credit may generate other problems or merchant claims that evaporate the credit.

By limiting the max purchase to Credit Limit, that puts a control ceiling on bank risk.

FWIW regarding credit balances Capital One is the same.

Until a transaction fully posts the available credit acts like the credit balance is not even there. I found this out a few years ago when I accidentally made the same payment twice.

I can definitely see how this would confuse people.

Let's test something:

Call Synchrony Credit Solutions: 877-379-8173 (Overseas) from the "backdoor numbers" thread.

Tell them that you are considering a purchase, what it is (if it's a rolex sub-mariner, tell them it's a watch, not the specific brand/model of the watch) and give them the exact price of the item.

Round that price up to the nearest $100 and ask them to increase your credit limit to that amount, so you'll be ready to go when you decide to make the purchase.

I was stuck at $10k for several months and did this and they bumped me up to $18.3k.

Additional DP:

-2 Synch cards

-No significant change in my file since the previous month's auto denial

-Card Balance was zero for every attempt (failed or successful)

-Average spend was $500/month for the last 10 months

-Had had the card for less than 1year when CLI was approved

-Total synch exposure before $30k

-Total synch exposure after $38.3k

-Rest of my info is in my siggy
