Hi. *cough* Delta person here. If a person were to hypothetically get this card and use their miles to book a China Southern flight using AA miles, does anyone know if China Southern would still honor the limited reciprocal benefits for Delta elites now that they have exited SkyTeam and have become an AA partner (with limited Delta partnership remaining) even though it's an AA award fare, or does this only apply for Delta or China Southern marketed flights?

New CITI American Airlines Platinum Select SUB

I realize many are not traveling and there are those shedding travel cards. But I stumbled upon an enhancement for the CITI AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard this morning and I wanted to let the community know in case anyone was interested.

The standard SUB for this card recently has been 50K AAdvantage miles for spending $2,500 in the first three months. And waiver of the $99 Annual Fee in Year One. This is still the offer I'm seeing on the CITI website.

I saw a different SUB on the American Airlines (aa.com) website this morning that has a higher value. The SUB is 40K AAdvantage miles but for meeting a lower spend requirement of $2,000 in the first three months. However, there is a CA$H credit bonus added to that for any American Airlines spending of up to $250. From my calculations, it appears the 40K miles + $250 SUB is about $110 in higher value than the 50K miles SUB alone*. You can apply for the card during the checkout process if you book an AA flight.

(*The Points Guy estimates AA miles are worth about 1.4 cents each. Therefore, 50K AAdvantage miles are worth $700. And 40K AAdvantage miles are worth $560. If you take full advantage of the $250 credit, you'd net 560 + 250 = $810 versus $700 on the 50K SUB alone. Either the 40K miles for $2K spend or the $50K miles for $2.5K spend works out to a value of 28% on that spending.)

Both SUBs give you a waiver of the $99 AF for one year.

You also get:

One free checked bag for you and up to four companions (normal cost $30 for first checked bag on domestic flights.)

Priority Boarding

25% savings on inflight food and beverage services (when they return)

I had never done the math for this card before now but it can have a decent earn rate if you spend enough on it. The card earns 2 miles for purchases on American and for restaurants and gas stations. One mile on all other spending. (That works out to an earn rate of 2.8% or 1.4% respectively.)

However, if you spend $20K annually (or about $1,666 per month), you get a $125 companion certificate that boosts your earnings on that spend by .00625%. (125/20000) So you could get a real return of up to 3.425% (2.8 + 0.625%) for airfare redemption on American Airlines purchases, restaurant purchases, and gas purchases (uncapped.) And you'd get 2.025% on all other purchases in that $20K spend. (1.4 + 0.625%) So you're beating a basic 2% card.

Checking about three domestic bags a year covers almost all the annual fee starting in year two, but of course this is profile dependent. YMMV, more or less, depending on travel and spend.

Combined with no annual fee in year one and an $810 SUB, this is a pretty sweet deal, IMO. As for me, I've got too many new cards this year to add any more right now, so I think I'll continue to garden. It's tempting, since if I added another CITI card the AAdvantage cards would be a good match.

Great information, and well written. Thanks!

Seems like a good deal for a $99/year card (with the first year free), for anyone that flies on AA frequently. Especially useful if you fly infrequently enough to not earn the baggage and priority boarding perks with airline status.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of airline cards since the earning and spending is tightly tied to the airline itself, making them less flexible than traditional non-cobranded travel cards, but they do usually offer more perks for less annual fees, making them a good choice for less-frequent travellers. For heavy travellers, the ~$500 AF cards like AMEX Platinum, CSR, Citi Prestige, etc. are usually much better choices, both in terms of earning rates, and flexibility of where you can earn and spend the points. CSR, for instance, offers 3x points for all travel purchases made anywhere, and the points can be used for pretty much any travel anywhere. They don't offer as much insofar as airline perks (free bags, priority boarding, etc) but I think usually the people who have these cards have elite status with one or more airlines anyways.

This AA card seems like a good fit for people who fly AA at least once a year (or plan to), but not more than 25k miles per year. After 25k miles/year, you'll already be getting the airline perks without this card, and can get enough higher and more flexible earnings rates with other cards to justify their higher annual fees.

The Barclay's would be worth (60 x 1.4) or $840 versus the $810 in the improved Citi SUB.

**The other big difference on the SUB is that Barclay's has no minimum spend (just one single purchase of any amount) while Citi's card requires $2K or $2.5K spend in 90 days!**

So I guess it depends on which bank you'd rather deal with and which card's benefits/SUBs align better with your plans!

Now that's an interesting question @K-in-Boston even though you're a "Delta Person" LOL Admittedly, Delta is easy for me to fly to ATL, MSP or SLC....and I actually flew them last year. Not a bad experience at all.

I would think that question would best be answered by someone familar with China Southern. I have used AA Award Travel with British Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines....all One World Partners. I should also caveat that similar to your Delta status, I have Lifetime Platinum Status with AA so I don't have/had encountered any restrictions with their partners. When I've flown award travel on their partners, my status shows up in their system and I have always been extended the same opportunities I would have had it been an actual AA flight...but that's because my Advantage Number is tied to the reservation. Using this card to credit miles would go to your AA Account so in essence, asking to change mileage programs before a ticketed itinerary is used so China Southern would see your Delta number and it's associated benefits....hmmm? I have to say, that's a new one.

I found this for you, but it primarily talks about lounge access and I am guessing you don't need a lounge, but instead seek other benefits.

https://www.aa.com/i18n/plan-travel/destinations/asia.jsp#chinasouthern

Got it! Well if you don't have much of any status with AA today....and getting these miles would not count as qualifying miles, you're not really farther ahead status wise, other than total miles in your account. If you used them for Award Travel, unless you were ticketed in Upper Class, getting those benefits wouldn't be offered to you.

I recall flying First Class on BA and regardless of my ticket origination (AA Award) or my status with AA, because I was in Upper Class on a transcontinental ticket, I was given lounge access, priority customs (this was before GE) and everything they offer those passengers. It was as if they didn't care whether the ticket was paid for in cash or miles. I would "think" if you're in an Upper Cabin, China Southern would be the same...but admittedly, I have never flown them.

Yeah, most airlines will offer similar services to F/J passengers as elites (or more correctly, the other way around). The only airline I can think of off the top of my head that seems to be different is Alaska, where some if not all of their lounges are available to paid and award F passengers, but not to elites on F upgrades that don't otherwise have access.

Edit: @Aim_High 😂 yeah there is always that option.

Yes! Alaska is a weird one!

I had a J ticket on AA in SEA with no AA lounge, attempted to use the Alaska lounge...no dice! Had to use PP access at some random lounge...UGH! Recently enjoyed the Centurion Lounge last year though.

If I'm not mistaken the Citi card does not offer a companion certificate, but rather a $125 discount on a ticket purchase, so it's value is as you described (for the first $20K annual spend)

The Barclays card on the other hand does offer a companion certificate for $99, and thus it's value is the cost of the ticket you are able to redeem it for (minus $99), which could very well be more than the Citi $125 discount.

For your first year of credit cardmembership, purchases qualify as of the date of your account opening. To receive the Flight Discount, your account must be open for one billing cycle after your annual fee is billed. The Flight Discount expires one year from date of issue of the certificate. The Flight Discount is redeemable toward the initial ticket purchase of air travel wholly on flights marketed and operated by American Airlines, or on flights marketed by American Airlines and operated by Compass Airlines, LLC, Envoy Air Inc., Republic Airways Inc., SkyWest Airlines, Inc., Mesa Airlines, Inc., PSA Airlines, Inc., or Piedmont Airlines, Inc. for itineraries originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands, and sold in US Dollars. The Flight Discount is also redeemable for air travel on any oneworld® carrier or American Airlines codeshare flight. The Flight Discount is redeemable online at AA.com, or by calling American Airlines Reservations. A reservations services fee may apply for travel booked through American Airlines Reservations. The Flight Discount is redeemable only toward the purchase of the base airfare and directly associated taxes, fees and charges that are collected as part of the fare calculation for travel. The Flight Discount may not be used for flight products and/or services that are sold separately or non-flight products and/or services sold by American Airlines. If the ticket price is greater than the value of the Flight Discount, the difference must be paid only with a credit, debit or charge card, or with American Airlines Gift Cards. If travel booked with the Flight Discount is cancelled or changed by the credit cardmember, the Flight Discount will be forfeited and the credit cardmember will be responsible for any applicable fare difference and the applicable change fee. The Flight Discount will not be replaced for any reason. The Flight Discount is non-refundable, may not be sold and has no cash redemption value. After qualification, please allow 8-12 weeks for delivery of the Flight Discount.

Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red verbage:

Anniversary Companion Certificate

At each card anniversary, you will be eligible to earn one (1) domestic economy fare Companion Certificate redeemable for one (1) companion ticket at $99 (plus taxes and fees) provided that $20,000 or more in eligible Net Purchases are made with your Card Account during the cardmembership year (each 12-month period through and including your Card Account anniversary month) and your Card Account remains open for at least 45 days after the anniversary date.
