PayPal Key Not Working with Geico

As the subject says, I can't add PayPal Key as a payment method on Geico via website nor app. Does anyone have any tips on how to get a PayPal payment through? I'm trying to max rewards on my Chase Freedom category. If anyone has any way around this, I'd love to hear it!

If you're trying to save it as a recurring payment option, PayPal key doesn't allow it. It should still work for one off payments.

That absolutely clarified it Brian, thank you SO much!

Now the curious thing is, as an alternate avenue, I registered for Plastiq. I'm experiencing a similar issue. Although...I'm not trying to set up a recurring payment it is not allowing me to store it as a "valid credit card." But I have definitely heard of people using PayPal Key through Plastiq. Am I doing something wrong again?

From what I remember on the PayPal key post on Doctor of Credit it seems to be YMMV. For every person reporting Plastiq working there were others saying they were encountering errors. With that said there seems to be a growing sense that eventually Plastiq will close this avenue up so people are putting everything on it while it still works

Update: apparently there was some outage occurrence that caused issues with PP key. Depending on the timing when you attempted the payment that might have been it. Check out the recent comments on the DoC article.

Thanks for all the suggestions, advice, and data!

Still doesn't seem to work. I imagine it's because Plastiq is requiring the card to be "Saved" to process a payment. I think that is an implication of "Recurring" so it isn't allowed by PayPal Key. If anyone has any other thoughts on how to get this to work, I'm all ears.

It's not super urgent since I'm already hitting the cap with a couple of PS5 purchases and my car insurance but I did want to try and switch cards after the PS5 purchases landed to another to earn some very minor percentage points on it.

PayPal Key is probably going to end up blacklisted a lot just like prepaid debit cards are. I have never used Plastiq though so I can't help you there.

I am looking at this here: https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/ua/ppkey-tnc is there somewhere else I should be looking? I see where it can't be used in-store but I don't see this security feature listed.

I am not doubting you I am just trying to understand if I am violating the TOS by having it saved in a couple of places because if so I want to correct that ASAP.

While not usually blocked, i did find scenario where it couldn't be used. Using PP on Fanatics. I could use card from PP wallet, but couldn't use masked card with PP Key.

Interestingly, I went to get the link to the page where it's listed (I literally just saw it a couple of days ago), but it's no longer there. The TOS actually covers recurring payments showing that it is allowed:

"You can agree with a seller who accepts PayPal to use PayPal as the payment method for future purchases with that seller. This agreement is between you and the seller and allows you to pay the seller on a one-time, recurring or sporadic basis. Examples of automatic payments that can be arranged by you either with a seller or with PayPal include those that PayPal calls a “billing agreement,” "subscription," "recurring payment,” “reference transaction,” "preauthorized transfer" or "preapproved payment."

If you have a personal PayPal account, you may cancel a recurring automatic payment up to 3 Business Days before the date of the next scheduled payment from your account settings or by contacting us through the PayPal Help Center, or by calling PayPal at (888) 221-1161.

Once your automatic payment is canceled, all future automatic payments under your agreement with that seller will be stopped. If you cancel an automatic payment, you may still owe the seller money for the purchase or have additional obligations to the seller for any goods or services that you receive but have not paid for.

If you have given advance authorization, either to a seller or to PayPal, that permits a seller to take or receive payments from your PayPal account on a regularly recurring basis (for example, every month or otherwise on a routine billing cycle), and if such payments will vary in amount, you have the right to advance notice of the amount and date of the transfer from the seller at least 10 days before the transfer is made. Maybe enough people complained about the inability to save it to vendor's sites that they enabled it, or maybe it was just a glitch. This would actually explain why some people have been able to save them to websites and apps. On the other hand, this could only apply to the ability of the card being saved to a web browser or digital wallet and have nothing to do with saving it with a vendor. Regardless, using it for recurring payments are allowed.

Good info again Brian! It now makes even less sense that I can't save my details with Geico or Plastiq.

I've had no trouble saving it to several recurring billers. And security makes little sense. I can save my PPMC for example without restriction, why would this need more?
