Discover has a card breach occurring today

Hello all.

Sorry I do not post much, but I do read postings everyday. Learned alot. Thanks to all.

Today, I received an email from Discover that one of my cards was compromised. I call, and was told that they had a lot of fraudulent charges in the last 2 days over many customer accounts. Many of the charges are $.59, $1.99, and $10 or more. Mine totalled $30 in one day. Most of the charges are from Apple.com/Bill.

So, please keep an eye on your Discover cards (especially SD ones). Although Discover is catching fraudulent charges, they cannot catch them all.

My data points on this matter: I only had two charges back in September from B&H Photo and a small company Proaudio Supply. Both done online. B&H had a data breach last year and there is no info on Proaudio I can find. No other online purchases this year with my Discover cards. Apple.com/Bill charges are $1.99 each. One charge was from Daisy Days, Shoals, IN for $.59. All charges done today.

Thanks for the heads up, just checked mine, good so far. Ever since I stopped storing any of my cards with a merchant my fraudulent charges have dropped to nothing.

Glad you mentioned about not storing cards with merchants which may reduce opportunities to acquire info for fraud.

True, but I have noticed with a couple places that they won't allow you to pay without storing it. I think one place is my Electric and another might be Target if I recall.

Maybe this is a coincidence, but I'm seeing strange things on my Amex Delta card today that could be related.

The card has a $30,000 limit. I haven't used it in a few months. (ETA: The balance is zero.) There are no recent transactions shown, pending or otherwise, but my Available Credit is showing as $29,998.00. Seems like there might have been an attempt to charge around $2, and Amex (correctly) believes it's fraudulent.

Maybe there's another explanation, but I can't think of what it might be.

Yep. This is exactly why I have notifications turned on for every single transaction on every single card.

yeah, I think i saw a weird transaction on my card. Have to wait for it to process, then dispute it. I have several AUs that use my account.

This happened 3 times with discover and BOA since 2019 with me.

My Amex thing was a non-issue. Just two legitimate, temporary $1 test charges from an auto-pay thing I had set up but forgotten. Sorry for introducing a red herring.

I have checked both of my cards. No fraud charges as of yet.

I do have push alerts set up for the lowest amount.

It's not every day you read about Shoals, IN on a forum like this! I actually have friends from that area, or they used to be. It's a tiny little town in very rural southern Indiana. I think it's an Amish community.

It is doubtful that Discover proper has a data breach. A more likely scenario is somewhere you used your Discover card had your card info compromised and makes your situation unique to you.

I had a similar situation with my RBFCU, but it's always a good thing to warn others to the possibility.

As stated on original post, they contacted me along with quite a few other members (not every card member) that this fraud occurred.

And as I said, I only used the card twice this year online.

My post is intended for people here with Discover and a reminder to check your card periodically. Especially if they are SD'd as mine was.

I called Discover again yesterday to followup and was told that the affected card members have been notified by email and or text about the situation and credits are being processed and new cards are being issued.

Discover texted me Halloween about a weird charge on a card I haven't used in awhile and ended up closing the account and sending me a new card
