Personally, if I had a way into an AOD card that would be the one I would pick. I actually would be happy with the simplicity of the AOD 3% back as my primary card.

Of those two, I'd go with SDFCU for a few reasons:

1. SDFCU has a $200 SUB after spending $3,000. You would have to spend $6,667 with AOD to get $200 in rewards. With SDFCU, you'd have $333.34 by the time you spent that much. Looking out even further, you would need to spend $20,000 before AOD started earning you more rewards than SDFCU ($20,000 x 3% = $600 vs. ($20,000 x 2%) + $200 = $600).

2. Personally, I don't see AOD keeping this card around in its current form long term as 3% flat rate cards have proven to be unsustainable for much larger banks without some sort of restrictions (e.g. annual fee, spend caps, etc). My guess is that AOD will start implementing restrictions in the not-too-distant future (they've already cracked down significantly on approvals). How do you feel about this given what you just experienced with Alliant?

3. AOD has an intense application process and requires applicants to jump through a lot of hoops (e.g. joining an approved organization just to be eligible for membership, membership requires a hard pull, manual application review, significant supporting documentation required, etc). How do you feel about going through all that for an extra 1% that very likely won't last and won't start earning you more rewards until you spend $20,000?

Just some things to think about.
