American Express Gold Card - Reinstate offer journey

Hi everyone,

I know there isn't a lot about Amex reinstate offers on here so figure I would post my journey!

I had an Amex PRG card back in 2016 spent aboutu $5k per month on the card paid in fulll every month...until I hit the year mark in 2017 and I lost my job. I ended up not being able to pay it off and it was charged off March 2017 with around a $5k balance. I also had an Amex SPG card that I ended up defaulting on with a balance of $1,100.

Fast forward ot April 2020 I received an offer to make payments on my PRG card and it would be reinstated once I paid it in full (I also had to pay in full my SPG). I made payment arrangements and today finally made my last payment. I called just to make sure the reinstatement would be processed and he said absolutley.

So, I should have someone calling from the reinstatement department within 25 days confirming I would like to reinstate my Amex Gold card, additionally I would receive all of my points back and it would have a $2,000 limit to start.

I will be waiting for their call and will update this thread once I speak with them!

That is awesome. I've learned from Amex there threshold is greater than $5000 balance to get offer of re-instatement so sounds like you fell into their sweet spot.

Hopefully they will update credit reporting appropriately to remove all the negative historical reporting.

I am interested if this happens as I was offered something similar. No guarentee but an offer to apply and if things look good on my side for qualification, I could get my Optima card back. Thanks for the info and I look forward to how it works out for you.

I had the same situation, had major back surgury and fell behind last year, 39 years with AMEX with the Gold Card. I received an offer in January for reinstatement if I paid off the entire balance due and they would open up my Gold Card again. Today I paid off the entire $6500 balance due in one ACH payment via my BOA account to them and was told someone from the Reinstatment Team (800-700-7619) would contact me in the next 30-45 days open up the card. Otherwise, it's an eloborate scam to get people to pay.

I wouldn't call paying what one owes a scam under any circumstances because it isn't, even without a promise of card reinstatement.

They merely sweetened the pot to get what's theirs in a first place.

If they offered it to you, you will get it.

I found this in a 2017 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Consent Order ruling against Amex.....

...Charge Card Reinstatement Offers (APOLLO), which allow customers to pay off their balances in full for a reinstatement of their account with a spending limit that is equal to a percentage of the amount paid.

You're using a discrimination finding against Amex that found them wrong to exclude Puerto Rico, Virgin Island, and Pacific Territories cardholders from the APOLLO and OASIS programs as basis to show that it's a scam? They determined American Express to be in the wrong for not offering the APOLLO and OASIS programs to collections cardholders who resided in the territories, not that they were in the wrong to offer it to customers elsewhere in the United States.

Without giving any further context along with it, all we can see is copying and pasting of a portion of a legal "ruling against Amex" in response to a post that was itself responding to your stating "it's an eloborate scam to get people to pay," so it is not unexpected for others to assume it was a response.

**UPDATE**!!!

I called the reinstatement line today - they asked me some identification security questions and updated my address. After completing that they went ahead and reinstated my American Express Gold Card as promised! $2000 limit to start, all my points back and card will be arriving in the mail in the next 7-10 days

So excited!!

**UPDATE 3/12**

For DPs or anyone who is interested, they updated my credit report and it is not longer charged off it just shows a 180 day late. They also let me upgrade my gold card to the platinum card and there was an upgrade offer (25k bonus if I spend $2000 in 6 months and then 10 points per dollar at grocery stores and gas stations up to $15,000).
