Citi Costco - Where are Pending Transactions?

Earlier today I used my Citi Costco Visa for the first time at a Costco gas station. I checked my transactions on Citi's website and in the Citi app and the transaction list is empty. My receipt shows both my membership number and last 4 of the CC along with "Approved". When I used my debit card to pump gas at Costco, the transaction would appear immediately in my checking account when I finished pumping gas.

I also used my new CFF three times today and all three of those transactions appeared immediately in my Chase account.

Does Citi show pending transactions before they post? Is there usually a delay with Citi before the transactions appear? I'm just trying to figure out how Citi handles pending transactions or if there could be something else wrong. Thanks!

Chase can be weird, too. It may also depend on the merchant.

I once paid for parking at the Death Valley National Park's Furnace Creek Visitor Center with a Chase card. It finally appeared on the Chase site as a pending charge...three weeks later...as "DEVAFCVC".

You can imagine my initial confusion. Fortunately a Chase rep was able to tell me that the merchant was in some sort of government services category, and from there I figured it out.

Seeing that you have the bofa cash rewards if it's a Visa card and you have platinum honors status can return 5.25% on gas

I have the LL Bean Mastercard from CBNA (another flavor of Citi), and one of my biggest complaints about the card is that I can't see pending transactions when I log into my account. That forces me into 20th century tactics such as saving receipts or making a note of each transaction.

Thank you for sharing your experience with a different Citi card. It sounds like that is how they operate. Not ideal but I will get used to it.

For the record, all pending transactions appear in my online accounts immediately with other lenders (BofA, Chase, Disco and GS). Only Citi has behaved this way so far.

My available credit does go down. Until recently, that was the only indicator that I had charged something. A couple of months ago, I started receiving text notifications for "card not present" transactions. So that's a start at least.

My cards with other banks all show pending transactions. Plus, their apps generate notifications. The ability to flip through my notifications frequently saves me the bother of going into my account. There's no app for the LL Bean card.

The other thing the LL Bean card doesn't do is track my rewards on a per-transaction basis. As an example, if I use the card to pay for gas at Mobil, there's no way to confirm that I earned the 2% reward. All of my other cards track transactions, either next to the transaction itself or on a separate list.

The transaction appeared in my Citi account this morning and posted to my balance, so I now know that the card does work. It just isn't ideal that Citi won't show transactions until they post.

I'm not canceling my card over this and I will continue to use it. Some lenders do things differently than others even though I had never seen this behavior until my experience with Citi.

The lack of pendings is definitely the main reason I won't consider another card from Citi. I never would have thought to ask that question until my LL Bean card was moved over from Barclays.

@CreditAggie, does the Costco card offer a way to track your rewards?

In the meantime, maybe someone will be able to chime in.

We used to have to wait for weeks to see the rewards earned on AMEX transactions. Thankfully, they've fixed that and made the information available either when the transaction posts or soon thereafter. I think Chase provides this information immediately upon posting. Capital One provides it a few hours after posting.

Sadly, the LL Bean card provides nothing to work with at all.

Not really, they show what you've earned over all, not per transaction. We didn't use the card last month, so there's nothing showing, but this months statement should give you an idea:

That's similar to what I see on my LL Bean card. I see total spending for each category. But if a transaction fails to earn the gas or restaurant reward, it's hard to pinpoint it so I can use a general spending card for that merchant the next time around.

So when I actually used gasoline before the pandemic, the solution for me was one gas purchase a month. 2% is my best gas reward, and I have it on three cards, so I may as well use a card that properly tracks my rewards. The one gas purchase a month is an easy way for me to have activity on the LL Bean card without giving up rewards. Restaurants are irrelevant to me because I have a grandfathered Savor, but the point would remain the same.

I just got my second tank of Costco gas with the Visa and this time I got a notification of the transaction from Citi and it appears in my account as a pending transaction. Hopefully this is how the card will work going forward.

This is how it should be!
