Chase declines gas station authorization...

When I try to get gas from Shell with my Freedom card, I get declined on the first try. It goes through the second time. I always see two $100 authorization holds immediately after. The first from the failed transaction. This has happened the last 3 attempts to get gas. Does this happen to you folk? I can't understand why Chase would decline a gas station charge from a gas station a few blocks from my home address. Especially during the Gas quarter for the Freedom card. This is looking a bit silly to be honest.

It could have something to do with merchant (Shell) and not Chase?

Just out of curiosity, have you tried a different gas station? just as a test and see?

ETA: I have never run into that issue .. using the Chase Freedom card at gas stations.

I just used my Freedom at a Union 76 pump about 3 hours ago, no issues.

Are you putting your zip code in correctly @Credit12Fico? Sometimes the number pad doesn't work very well.

I had this same thing happen to me recently using my AmEx & Quicksilver, but it was $150 holds. It happened at the same Kroger gas station I always buy gas from. AmEx told me it was the merchant that set the threshold. Of course, the people at the station knew nothing. I went across the street to Shell and there was no problem.

I suspect with the price of gas going up merchants are trying to protect their product. But holds that high are just crazy. But the merchant definitely sets the hold amount.

Amex (and Amex network cards) always puts a $100 hold. (at least in my 35+ years of experience.)

At least you can get $100 worth of gas, unlike some other cards that are limited to less than $100 per transaction.

That has not happened to me at Shell with Freedom. Trying a different location sounds like a reasonable suggestion. Some Shell stations are a little squirly.

I had the same issue this past Friday! I figured Chase thought it was a fraudulent charge. I didn't get a text or call though.
