Card with highest minimum SL

Hey everyone,

Just a question out of curiosity...

Which credit card has the highest minimum SL?

I recently read in another post that the Alliant Visa signature has a minimum SL of $15K. That's a generous SL!

Are there any cards that beat that?

There are a few institutions that have minimul SL requirements for some products, like Alliant, but it also boils down to overall profile if you do not meet the criteria for the product. There are a sprinkle of CUs that have some minimum SLs and there are the larger players such as Chase who offer the United MileagePlus Club Visa ($15K) or the Sapphire Reserve Visa Infinite ($10K), as some examples.

That said, if one has the right profile, income, DTI, scores, credit history, banking relationship, etc., cards from NFCU can be approved for a $25K SL, for instance. Others like FirstTech or UNFCU come to mind as well.

I wasn't familiar with Alliant Visa Signature having a minimum limit so I checked it out. Per the pricing and terms disclosure, the minimum limit on this card is $10,000, not $15,000. But thanks for pointing that out and the topic. That $10K limit is the same as the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

A card I've considered applying for has a published minimum $25,000 limit, the First Command Bank Visa Signature Premier.

Many premium cards probably have some unpublished minimum limits at or even well above $25K. What is more common to see is published maximum limits, as in "up to $50K or $100K." That includes cards with lenders like United Nations FCU and First Tech FCU, among others.

One example of an ultra-premium card which probably has such an unpublished high minimum limit is with the Swiss investment bank, UBS. Their premium travel card is a Visa Infinite that comes with a $495 AF. While their limits may be influenced by assets on account, I've seen several starting limits well over $50K on this card. And one member was approved for $286K, although he was very high income and well-invested with UBS. Likewise, I wouldn't be surprised if the lower UBS Visa Signature had a minimum SL of $15 to $25K or more.

Visa Signature $5000

Just an item to keep in mind regarding the above. While in the past the minimum SL guidelines were based on the tier level, each lender will make a determination on the tier level and the SL. For example, a variety of banks or CUs can offer Visa Platinum cards as low as $250 (some could be lower). Visa Signature cards can range as well, anything from $250 to sky is the limit - Amazon Prime Visa Signature is an example. Visa Infinite is not $10K for all lenders - US Bank offers VI with limits <$10K, for instance.

I was actually just looking into that haha. Mastercard doesn't seem to have a minimum SL with their tier system.

To be honest I didn't know much about the different tiers with MC or Visa until doing my research tonight. I truly enjoy researching everything credit related 😁

Just for fun the lowest cl ive ever recieved was $300 on a Macys / PPMC so theres always to be grateful for on a high sl lol

In my experience, this is one of those weird situations. Some lenders say there's a minimum SL, and people tend to assume VS cards have a minimum of 5k, but I know that often one will get lower limits than the supposed minimum. I think your profile is far more significant when determining CL than what's written in the "rules."

Maybe there are cards that truly do have a bottom SL? If so, I would assume that if your profile can't support it, you just won't get approved for it.

Precisely. If your profile doesn't support the minimum SL on a card then you simply won't be approved. So finding cards with a minimum SL isn't a guaranteed way to get higher SLs.

Right. If the question is "I want a high SL [whatever that means for you], which card should I apply for?" knowing min SLs isn't all that useful, as an issuer can simply decline you for that card, whereas a NFCU etc could give you a much higher SL (as well as a lower one!). So going with a min SL issuer can either get you what you want, or nothing....

LTL Bank offers a Super Senior Visa Infinite with an impressive SL of $400K. Unfortunately, tough underwriting means no-one has actually got it yet, due to the non-recon requirement that the applicant is more than 300 years old, and still employed.

The Chase Amazon Prime card is an example of a Visa Signature exception. Starting limits can be as low as $500, but all cards are Visa Signatures.

Usually, the minimum starting limit is synonymous with minimum credit limit. With AMEX, for instance, if you try to transfer limits, a larger limit has to remain on some donor cards than others. And we've seen oddball cases where Chase Sapphire Preferred limits dip below the 5K minimum starting limit due to adverse action.

Great points above made by several members that the overriding factor is PROFILE.

To get those high limits, the profile must support it.

And if the profile supports those high starting limits, that profile could probably achieve relatively high results on a lot of other cards that have much lower average or minimum SLs.

Unlike the other cards, I don't see anything in the credit disclosures about any minimum.

This credit article indicates that, as of 2019, the average (not minimum) approvals are around $10K for Venture and discusses reported approvals as high as $50K.

This 2015 thread from My Fico indicated high limits on Venture at that time. I believe since then that Capital One has become a lot more conservative on starting limits. (I've seen several threads from many years ago where Capital One was mentioned as a "High Limits" lender. Not necessarily the case any more.)

They currently do not approve SLs at $50K for sure -- those days are gone (unless they decide to revisit their lending criteria in the future). There were a handful of us who were able to achieve Capital One's $50K 'FOTM' back during 2015.

With the right profile, though, Capital One's current 'highest SL' is $30K -- QS, Venture, Savor and Savor One (including some business cards).
