Savor One dropping Cell Phone Protection

My statement cut yesterday. Upon reviewing it, I saw this message under Account Notifications:

"Starting October 1, 2021, your Mastercard will no longer feature Cellular Wireless Telephone Protection. Coverage for eligible claims made before that date will continue to be available, and you may continue to file for benefits in accordance with the benefit terms."

I know that certain Capital One cards have been dropping various protections recently, usually Platiums and Quicksilvers, but I hadn't yet seen anything like this on the Savor family of cards. Has anyone else seen a similar message?

Kinda-sorta; the only Quicksilver cards which have lost this protection are what I'll call "legacy" cards, the newer cards, which are World or World Elite MasterCards still have that benefit, however, it is provided via MasterCard. My question for you is, what "class" is your SavorOne? If the same thing holds true for the SavorOne card which is happening wiht the legacy Quicksilver cards, I'm guessing yours is a non-World or Platinum MasterCard. Yes, no?

Maybe they dropped it to continue Groceries category. I'll check my World Elite statement later this month, but didn't use SO for cell bill, or cell protection.

My bet is if your card is a World Elite, it won't be NERFed. Why? Because the mobile phone protection for World and World Elite cards is from MasterCard and not the card issuer.

Okay, color me surprised too. My understanding from the MasterCard web site, if the card is a World Elite, it should have mobile phone protection built in:

I remember something from my Quicksilver statement a few months ago about something dropping, I'd have to look back and see exactly what it was.

My Quicksilver was upgraded from a Platinum about 14 months ago if that means anything.

Having a World Elite card doens't mean you have World Elite benefits.

The card issuer can pick and choose what benefits they allow through their card. For example, Citi Double Cash, world elite, but offers zero world elite benefits, the world elite sole purpose it to collect higher swipe fees.

No, the double cash was the original poster child for this, the killer phrase, under Benefit Terms and Conditions on your link is:

Availability of insurance benefits on your card may vary by card issuer. Please refer to your issuing financial institution for complete insurance benefit coverage terms, conditions and exclusions.

Turns out that issuers opt in, and Citi, on the Double Cash, chose not too. So they can drop whenever as well.

Hmmm, well very annoying. My wife and I both have Quicksilver cards, and if the mobile phone protection gets dropped, the cards might get either sockdrawered or dropped as well.

Yup, this and the tidbit provided by LTL upthread.

Having WMC or WE doesn't guarantee such benefits, the issuer decides which ones they will provide or opt-out. So, nothing to do with "class" or tier level.

Citi dropped all benefits from their cards too. I'm sure that they all still pay MasterCard something for these benefits even if they're standard.

There is the WF Active Cash flat 2% CB that was just released that has cell phone protection. With that said tho WF can be fickle if you don't have a relationship with them.

Not sure if this has been confirmed yet, but if Max Cash mastercards do offer cell phone protection (and it seems that some might), that could be the best, 5% off the bill + insurance.

I base my cards on rewards, and not the merits of MasterCard, or Visa benefits. While either may be Nerf'd, benefits are cut more frequently. While cellphone protection is a great benefit, it's often first to go, for the cost factor alone.

@Anonymous This is true. The best I've found so far is the NFCU cashRewards 1.5% + Protection. And this is for the $600 per claim/$50 deductible. (Visa's have a watered-down version, $250 per claim/$50 deductible) If the Max Cash MC's offer this I'd like to know, for sure. I'm already on the hunt for my next CU that carries the Max Cash.

No, in the Max Cash megathread there are banks that issue it as MC. But the majority do seem to be Visa
