Hi all,

about 2 weeks ago I called to have a replacement card sent to me after I lost current one. I called because it was not letting me order one online. It was a Saturday and the representative must have missunderstood that i just needed a replacement card because he completely closed out my account. I have been a Citi client since 2009. I called last week and told them they mistakenly closed my account and said they were sending a request to have it opened since it was done in error. I called today for an update and they stated it was declined. I explained to them that the account would have still been opened if I wouldn't have called for a replacement card. I was an exemplary client, never late and never held a balance. Is there anyone higher up I can talk to? Would calling the EO office help?

Thank you!

Did you ask why it was declined? Did they, or are they going to, send you a letter with an explanation?

From what you've said there should've been no reason to decline reopening your account--and you're owed an explanation.

Is there anything you've left out that might be relevant? For example, has your financial situation changed [for the worse] dramatically since the last time they would've had occasion to look at it? I'm thinking something like: your FICO scores were in the 800s before, and now they're in the 600s. As long as Citi had no reason to check, they didn't know--and now they do. (Someone please correct me if I've got this wrong!)

At any rate, my motto is "never take no for an answer!" so I would definitely pursue this. At the very least you're owed an explanation, so take it from there. If their reasons are valid, I'd say you're stuck.

I am sure people have great experiences with citi over all but not me.

First around the late 80's i had an issue with them over my checking account at a time when i had 10k in savings, i quickly took my money and changed .

in 2009 i had 2 credit cards with them, one was 6k and the other 8k. at one point after years of having the cards i took a cash advance from each to make a purchase from someone who didnt take cards, citi promptly balance chased me to just above my balance and jacked my interest thru the clouds, i called a csr and got nothing but nastyness. i called back again and had the two cards converted into installment loans at low interest with autopay from my chase checking. so i dont care for citi to this day.

That's just wrong on so many levels! 😂

OP- I would say. It definitely worth a email or a call to explain the situation. Sadly, if the outcome is not in your favor, take it as a lesson- albeit a painful one.

Bright side - you will still have it reporting on your reports for the next 7 years. I only hope it doesn't cause your score to drop, if this card had a decent limit and was being used as a "buffer" for your utilization.

Wishing you luck on your quest.

When I wanted an AU removed from citi they closed my account, opened a new one and I got a new card, they said it was the only way, basically they're just changing the acc nr but it looks like they close the account completely.
