I'd hold onto it if I were you. At the very least, you're still in your first year with Discover so you might want to take advantage of their cash back match.

Why not wait out the first year, collect your bonus and see if they offer you a CLI at some point?

I also started out with a $200 limit on my Discover secured card and know it can be difficult to make that limit work, but it is doable.

I'm super frustrated and disappointed. My 7th statement cut and I got an email saying I'd get my deposit back. It just said to confirm how I wanted my refund. So I checked my account and no CLI. I did a CLI request and it said they couldn't approve it. I chatted with the lady and she didn't see any reason why I wasn't given an increase.

If I had known I wouldn't get an increase I would have increased the security deposit so that I'd at least have a workable credit limit. I have made perfect payments on every account I have, and have never gone over the credit limit. I have made multiple payments per month. My scores have increased by 50-75 points since I opened this card, with scores between 625-650, so none of this makes sense.

The lady was like, "just because you didn't get an increase now doesn't mean it won't EVER increase! We check every month!" BS. If they were going to increase it any time soon, they would have just done that. I don't even want to keep this card open anymore because a $200 limit isn't workable. It's not worth keeping a card open with such a low limit and having to remember to make multiple payments. If you make it that hard for me to use the stupid thing I won't use it.

The 625-50 Fico is why, you need to really be 660+ before you will start to see moves up. Work on getting your Fico up higher and after 2 months past 660 (especially on TU) its what they use for moves up then ask.

use it for a recurring monthly bill under $200, and give it a couple of months - and agreed on the scoring being above 660 will help

the way i am looking at this, is they Graduated you. -which is great

but they dont have to do 2 things at the same time - graduate and bump your limit

so be happy with the first - get your $200 back, and plan for more good things to happen with them

good luck to you

Plenty of posters here have graduated with a CLI and a lower score. The lady even said credit score wasn't factored in at all, it's just on time payments and not going over the limit.

The card was used to 2-3x the CL every month, paid in full repeatedly each month, with a small balance posting some months and the paid in full. So it's not a matter of using the card or not. The lady said it wasn't credit score or lack of usage, she said she would be able to see the reason if there was one.

I'll likely just cancel it. It's not worth the hassle of trying to make this small limit work. If I use it at the wrong time it hurts my credit when $20 or more reports to their statement. It's not worth the hassle. I played by their rules precisely, and even avoided trying to refinance my car the last few months because I didn't want to look like I was credit seeking. I did everything right and while they didn't NEED to increase me I would rather still be secured so I could increase my limit myself. There is nothing exciting about this graduation whatsoever. We all know the massive majority of people get a CLI when they graduate.

why doesn't it show who I'm responding to anymore. You complain about no CLI?!?

My guy/girl/(insert said pronoun here), you started the card with a $200 deposit. Absolutely!!! Not sure as to the reason you went for a secure card... maybe lack of credit or maybe bad decisions or circumstances.. whatever it was, here you are. I think I speak for everyone who was in your shoes at one time or another... Rebuilding blows, believe me... I filed BK7 because of bad decisions. I went through a ton of growing pains like most here. I will insert disclaimer here;

"your results may vary"

I see it two ways;

1. Cancel the card... be salty. Why waste your time! I mean you already wasted 6 months dealing with a $200 CL
or

2. You've used the limit the last 6 months... it will get better- Keep the card use it to pay for Netflix, Hulu, or a small monthly subscription. Set to auto pilot/ auto pay - And revisit in 6 months and see if you get a CLI.

A few years ago, I did the latter. The rest is gone to the history pages. If your post was just to vent, have fun. Everything I said in here is stuff you already know. Be patience. Nothing heals wounds like time and a handle of an adult beverage of your choice!

Wishing you the best on your journey of Growth!

@Anonymous

There is ABSOLUTELY a reason why you weren't given a limit increase, and chances are you will NEVER know what it is.

I started my rebuild with the Discover secured card back in Aug of 2019; and just like you, I opted to open it with a $200 deposit. I used the card regularly, made payments as my charges posted, and I never once let a balance report. Exactly seven months later, I received an email that my deposit was being returned, and my limit was raised to $1,200. (As an aside: the only other credit card I applied for over that seven months was the Capital One Platinum Mastercard; and I truly believe that, in addition to other factors, excessive credit seeking DOES play a role in how Discover chooses to handle secured accounts.)

During my browsing on the forums, I always find the sense of entitlement that some feel as it relates to credit to be absolutely fascinating. Banks and credit unions don't owe consumers ANYTHING; and regardless of the "disappointment" you feel, perhaps looking at the BIGGER picture would help. In my case, Discover giving me a chance opened the door to Amex and Chase for me; and although I closed my account back in February, I will ALWAYS be grateful for the opportunity I was given to prove myself.

@Anonymous - totally up to you if you decide to keep or cancel - i was just making a suggestion on how to see if you can grow it, since you just spent 7 months 'care and feeding' it

that said - it is usually not a good idea to close a card in under a year - so if you do decide to close it, wait another 4 or 5 months - it won't cost you anything

now - if you look at my Discover in my sig - i believe it started at $1k in Jan 2017

so i guess that is why i am being more optimisic about your (anyones) chances at growing the card

good luck whichever way you go

That's what I did right after 8 month mark they didn't unsecured the card even tho I did good. So I canceled the card. Doesn't matter anyways because I was approved for a capital one quicksilver $500 limit so no need to have the discover secured card.

@Anonymous Hi - i dont have a full history of the CLI's but i mainly used this card for BT's over the years - i got some Auto CLI, but primarily it was me asking every 3-4 months

i went from 21k - 22k in Feb of this year - then another 1k in April to bring it to 23k - so they are smaller, but steady

i have $15k running on it right now for a BT

You already put in the effort for a secured card, just wait it out.... I got my card in a different time but back in those days... I got kinda a lowish starting CL... three months later an significent autocli, and for awhile every few months i got more more more..but this was a different time period... it stinks that it graduated without a CLI, but give it some more time, use it a little, and try to get your score up around the 660 range.. think tu was the important one at the time .. keep it there for a month or two and hit the button.... I do see growth potential in your future but Miss Disco is being a bit fickle, regardless of the CSR your scores do matter for CLI...

Good luck and congratulations... You won half the battle, now finish it =)

-J

@Anonymous, in your shoes I'd let the emotions of the lack of a CLI pass and just keep using the card, Discover has a pretty good reputation for increasing credit lines, and sooner or later, you'll get there.

@RSX wrote:

that said - it is usually not a good idea to close a card in under a year - so if you do decide to close it, wait another 4 or 5 months - it won't cost you anything

Really? Why is it not a good idea to close a card under a year? Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I think this is the first time I've seen that advice.

FWIW, I closed my CapOne secured card last year after less than 7-weeks and the closure had virtually no impact on my credit scores; in fact, since it has been over a year since I opened that card, it is actually helping my scores a bit with the AAoA.

I say stick with it. Mine didn't graduate until my 8th or 9th statement. Who knows why, as my profile only improved that I can remember with no lates, over the limits, or negative behavior. But I did graduate indeed and got a small boost with it. I got my cash back match after a year. I am glad to grow a relationship with their credit products. You have to start somewhere or you will get nowhere. No pain, no gain.
