Strange request from FNBO

Finally received my card in the mail, gave the number a call and was routed to the fraud department.. Weird.. I haven't even used it yet..

CSR tells me that somehow my phone number got deattached from my application/account.. and in order for me to activate the FNBO card, I would need to go to any bank and have the branch manager call the number on the back of the FNBO card telling the FNBO CSR I am the person listed on the card.

This sounds fun. Anyone experience this?

According to their website, their branches are only in a few states. What if you don't live in one of those states?

I'm not doubting the issue happened, I guess anything could happen..as odd as it seems..but the resolution doesn't seem feasible

I'd try calling in to speak to someone else. Or maybe start with a regular CSR, not the Fraud Dept first.

Literally ANY bank? Like you could go to BofA or Chase or WF and they'd accept that manager's word? How would they even know it really *is* a bank manager?! It could just be a friend of yours. Internally, a bank manager would be able to provide their employee information (whatever they use, an employee number, a security code, their branch location's ID and phone numbers, etc.), but some random OTHER bank...I don't get it!

This is more confusing then when I had to go get a medallion signature for Fidelity investments...

I very highly Doubt that if I go to Citi/Chase/WF they'll call FNBO on my behalf and tell them that I am who I say I am... I'm sure there's a internal security guideline that prevents them from doing so.

I didn't even consider that FNBO would take the word of say a Chase Bank Branch Manager when they wouldn't know or care on why this was going on. I figured FNBO would want you to go to THEIR bank. Sorry about the confusion. Good luck!

I personally have never heard of this with FNBO but they appear to be issuing their evergreen card to just about anyone around the country. This is something a few eastern CUs and banks would pull not FNBO. If you can really go into any bank and have the branch manager call then I would do that and if that fails you might have to just SD the thing and let it auto close for non use if this cannot be resolved. I would try the FNBO underwriter number and see if they can help

But I wonder if this is just slight miscommunication. When an employee of bank X says "any bank" they may well mean "any of our branches" becaue that is all they think of. Much more likely than they would suggest going to another bank entirely, for all the reasons of disbelief in this thread.

Are we certain the word "notary" wasn't mentioned? Most every bank has one on staff and they can be used to verify identity when signing documents.

She didn't mention that, but I suppose it'll work. Chase and my other primary bank looked at me with 12 eyes, had no idea what to do, or even why FNBO would request ANOTHER, ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, bank to verify my identity.

Exactly. That's exactly how I expected them to act. I know I would react that way if I worked at a bank and a customer of some OTHER bank asked me to call THEIR bank to prove who I am...I don't know, I might call security over!

I would call FNBO back and ask them to clarify exactly what they are expecting you to do. If they want identity verification through notary, ask them to email or snail mail you the form they want notarized and then it should be a fairly simple process. Otherwise I cannot see how any other FI is going to help with this.

Follow-up:

Called FNBO back to be crystal clear on the instructions, nothing changed. Monday morning, went to US Bank.. after explaining what I needed, they told me to take a seat and the manager would be out shortly. Well, have it be.. instead of the manager greeting me.. it was a sheriffs deputy. After explaining to him that i'm not here to rob the bank ._. he called FNBO and "authenticated" my identity. The US Bank manager was so confused that another bank would tell a customer to pick any bank and have that branch's manager call a totally different bank to verify someone's identity on their behalf.

How long until it shows on my credit report?

It was already approved, I had the card and all the paperwork with me.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't sure if they put the whole thing on hold until they confirmed your full identity. Although reare, they've been known to rescind apps (even after the approval).

As far as reporting, anywhere from 30-45 days (typically after your 1st statement generates).

I'm glad you didn't get hauled in to explain things 'downtown' and it all worked out okay. But this is, hands-down, the strangest, most bizarre bank-related thing I've ever heard....
