Refund from another card/unmatched funds with Rewards Cards?

I had a somewhat of a strange situation today, due to a mistake of mine.

I, for a while now have been using the Paypal CB MasterCard for my purchases but have recently have switched to the Chase Freedom Unlimited with the nice sign-up offer.

I bought an item at a local store with the Paypal CBMC but have since used the Chase instead.

Without thinking today, I refunded the item with the Chase Card instead of the PP CBMC.

Chase is showing the refund as expected but how will Chase handle it? Do they remove Rewards even though I never earned Rewards on it with them and do they remove part of the scale on how much I spent towards sign-up bonus? Also do they pretty much just process the refund as a payment in this case?

You can expect them to reduce the rewards on your Chase account just as if you had originally made the purchase with the Freedom Unlimited.

If the purchase that was refunded was at a drugstore or for dining Chase will reduce your rewards at the 3% rate, otherwise it will be at the 1.5% rate. If the vendor was in a non-bonus category for Chase it's possible you'll come out slightly ahead (earned 2% on PPMC, lost 1.5% on Chase Freedom Unlimited). Most vendors require returns to be made to the same card to prevent people from "gaming" this exact situation. (I'm not saying that's what you were doing, but some have tried.)

If you're currently working on a sign-up bonus, they will deduct the amount of the refund from your progress on the bonus. It will definitely not count as a payment; you'll still need to make any payment just as usual.
