ELAN MCP / Optimum : Category?

I am guessing there has to be some MFr's who have this card and have Optimum Cable Service

So my question is - which category does this fall under?

TV, Internet & Streaming Services or Utilities?

On the surface, one would think TV, Internet & Streaming Services, however Optimum is not listed and the now defunct BBVA that I used to use for Optimum would fall under utilities.

Same thing for Geico AUTO Insurance. BBVA it used to fall under utilities - does the same go for ELAN MCP? 🤔

Cable will be included in Internet-whatever category, not utilities.

No clue where Geico would fit, never used it for that purpose.

Hey @Wavester64 me and my DH have this card. We have Optimum though I want to switch but that's another thing. He paid the bill with his Elan Card and it falls under Internet.

No clue about geico try pushing a small payment and see what happens.

I have Geico billing to my CFU and here's the details. This should be the same for any Visa.

My Geico billing coded slightly different on my AOD, and coded just as "Insurance". I'm also interested on whether or not MCP will code it as Utilities as well; I was looking at the MCP for sporting goods primarily but if it codes as utilities and I'm able to put my premium on it, that would get me ~$70/year additionally over my AOD, which would make the MCP much more enticing.

For science, I just tried a $6 (meant to be 5 but slipped!) payment on Cash+ to Geico. Will take a while to see how much it gets, but hopefully I will have the answer by the time annual renewals come round in may.

Just to clarify, the MCC is "6300 - Insurance sales, underwriting and premiums." The category of "Bills & Utilities" is just what the card issuer is classifying as a broad category for MCC code 6300, and does not necessarily mean that the MCC is included in the way they define "Utilities" for category earnings. U.S. Bank (and by extension Elan) usually has very specific MCCs that earn bonus earnings in those categories.

Looks like the answer is no. Last month I made only two purchases on oen of my Cash+: $5 to my electrical utility and $6 to Geico. The 6 slip referred to above turned out to be useful so now I will claim I did it deliberately!

I got $0.31 in rewards (why we all play this game). This must come from 5% on the $5 to the utility, and 1% on $6 to Geico. So USBank won't give 5% there, and we presume Elan is similar.

ETA: On the Merchant Info category Geico is listed as Auto*Transport. with MCC 06300. The Utlitity is listed as "Transfer" but with the 04900 MCC.

When it first came out, Cash + had a "Bill Pay" category that specifically included insurance payments (as well as utilities). This went away in the first nerfing (the 5% was originally uncapped, so unsurprisingly was too costly!)
