I started with the apple card back in May of 2020 with I think a 6.5k limit (maybe it was $3500 but I can't find my notes). I didn't start asking for CLI's until last winter. After a decline or two with minimal use of the card I read about the 25% trick where you should use 25% of your credit line within the 3 month period before you ask for a CLI. I have been playing with this and I have received 4 increases by doing the 25% spend.

This previous quarter I wanted to see if they would give me a CLI while just making the minimum payment and a lot of spend...they won't.

I still have not determined if the 25% spend is 25% each of the three months before a CLI request or just 25% over the three month period. I have had to do some home renovations and I had side hustle expenses so I was fortunate enough to have the charges to put on the card and I put 25% in each of the 3 months before a request, just to be sure.

This is by far the easiest and most routine and bankable method to get higher credit lines. My last increase today of 10k put me above my X1 card and Apple is now at 28k. I hope to have enough legitimate spend to get me close to 50k within the next year.

I got the new Marcus GM card and I am hoping that they use the same CLI algorithm. That would be awesome!

I kinda don't understand.

You just described just about any lender.

It's not a trick, and while getting increases isn't some guaranteed norm, it's "normal"

Most respond well to use, some will give increases with nominal use, and others don't budge without using significant portion of credit line for extended period of time.

I am just not sure what's "easy" about apple card. One would think that doing .99 cent reload on Amazon every six months and getting increase would be considered easy.

The "method" described above is kinda business as usual unless there is something I'm missing. I just don't see what's "easy" about it, I guess.

@Remedios wrote:

The method is easy because it does not appear to be disciminatory; if you do this...you get this.

Maybe we could create a list the tried and true ways to get an increase for each issuer. But from my experience here, and while there may be some good guidelines, the method of getting a CLI at apple is the most routine.

Capitl One for example. Some will get regular CLI opportunities other could get some and then nothing for years. Regardless of their spending patterns. No one knows how to improve the odds with Capital One. You can make a best guess and try something new. Maybe carry a balance when you always paid in full. Or try to go over your limit and see if you can get a bump. But the method is not clear as to what would really work.

With the Apple card it appears the "method" is clear. For the most part I do the same with all my cards and pay in full. Yet, Bank of America would rather give me a new card than increase my limit on an existing one. What is their methodology there? What can I go to and say.. I do this and they will do that.

This is the "method" I speak of and it is not normal or business as usual to have an issuer do that. Now I am sure I will hit a wall with Apple soon. But I feel confident that if this "method" is followed by most others that they will receive a similar benefit unless there is something else in their profile that would be derogatory.

If there is another specific issuer that you know of where I can follow a specific method and receive a similar benefit, pleae tell me of them and the method. I would be more than willing to do that as it would greatly benefit me and others on this forum.

I'd go with Citi as the easiest CLI process. Put card in sock drawer and mostly forget about it. Maybe put $5 on it every 18 months or so to keep them from closing the account. Log in every 6 months and receive a $1500-8000 SP CLI.

What I like about Apple / GS Credit Card is ease of use and simplicity. I received the card in September for $1500 Limit and I received a CLI to $2500 in December. Hoping for another cli around March time frame. It is nice Apple / GS Card gives cli for good use of the card and cli's with the use of the card is certainly an incentive but the simplicity of the card is what I love about it. I am not going to complain or comment if the card is good or bad. Card does what I want and gives me rewards and cli's for my good behaviour and taking care of the account.

Before I closed it, my apple card credit limit was at a little over one tenth what my highest credit limit was, and was significantly lower than all my other credit limits. I closed the card at a credit limit of $2750. I started at $2500. Most of my credit cards are around 15k credit limits and my highest is $25k.

I bought apple equipment and paid it off quickly, I tried to use it for small amounts each month. I only got a $250 cli in 2 years. My ficos are all in the 770s and 780s

So...Goldman Sachs hates some of us, and for some of us it isn't "easy" to grow the card lol

Apple card is definitely growing for me. I use it for everything to pay bills, gas at Safeway stations and whenever I am out to dine and Apple Pay is accepted.

The ease and convenience is what motivates me to keep using it. And yes, usage generates CLI. In 6 months, I received two $2k CLIs.

One would think that doing .99 cent reload on Amazon every six months and getting increase would be considered easy.

The "method" described above is kinda business as usual unless there is something I'm missing. I just don't see what's "easy" about it, I guess.

It's true that increased spending patterns are often helpful in a successful CLI, regardless of the lender. And I would agree even more that the easiest CLs are those that come regularly with low-to-no usage and a soft pull! (Navy Federal CU, for example!) The AMEX 3x CLI on new cards is another example of an exceptional rate of increase. But those lenders and situations seem to be the exception from my experience.

IMO, Goldman Sachs - Apple is "easy" compared to many other lenders for a few reasons.

Increases may be approved once every 91 days. This is highly unusual since six months seems be closer to the norm.

Increases are always approved with a soft pull. While many lenders will approve with a soft pull, hard pulls are still the predominant expectation and can even occur with lenders who also do soft pulls such as Navy Federal (if you call instead of processing electronically) or AMEX (YMMV).

Approval process is very simple and quick with an immediate reply from a text message via Apple Wallet. My last one probably took three minutes and was available immediately in my available balance.

Yes, usage volume sometimes drives a CLI, but Goldman Sachs appears to be much more generous per each CLI relative to the same spending level than other major lenders. My data points, for example, showed Apple card could get a successful CLI starting with spending about 25% of current credit limit. But Capital One needed something akin to 45% of credit limit to approve an increase. (my last CLI) Meanwhile, in recent years, Capital One often gives a maximum of $3K per CLI while Apple card can grow as much as $10K per CLI. While lower SLs haven't grown as much as higher limits, the relative fast growth has been well documented by quite a few of our members. One of the best cases-in-point is @CreditAggie who grew his SL a multiple of 48x from $250 to $12,000.

Apple card limits can grow quite high. One member documented his regular increases up to a CL of $68K.

What might be useful is if we compiled more data points about spending levels on cards from other lenders relative to each CLI, but my casual observations are that Apple card would be one of the easier-to-grow cards. Yes, the "method" OP described isn't particularly special to Goldman Sachs, but what is special is some quantifiable data points about the minimum spend level needed for success. We don't have much data on that from other lenders as far as I know.

@fm92555, I estimated that spending a minimum of 25% to 30% of current credit limit was needed for successful CLI based on multiple data points in an early Apple CLI thread. It was based on total spend over a few months prior to requesting the increase, so if you're spending 25% of CL per month over three months, that would be 75% over 90 days. Heavier spend such as that has led to larger relative increases! Congratulations on your successes with the Apple card!

This is great info. I didn't use my Apple Card much after getting approved for $5500 in September, and saw others posting about the ease in CLI approvals. I tried last month, and was denied the CLI, "...not able to provide an increase at this time.... try again later..." ...my words...

I did apply after a Soft pull preapproval for the GM Rewards (also Goldman Sachs) and was approved to $8000 on that card a few weeks ago.

I originally just got the Apple Card to help with my utilization. I also wanted the card in case we had emergency Apple purchases for work (if CEO breaks his phone, etc.). I could get the cashback benefit while being reimbursed for the equipment by my company...

Will take this usage into consideration and try again in the summer after a few months of higher use...

Congratulations on your CLIs. This is the next card on my list to acquire. I just got the X1 and am putting a lot of my spend on that in this first month with 4X points and will do so for several more months to see what I can get for CLIs with them. After that I will get the Apple card and start to work on it. Your success is exciting for me to see!!!
