Hilton Honors Surpass Upgrade

After about 2.5 years from opening my HH card, Amex finally offered me an upgrade to the Surpass or Aspire. I accepted the Surpass @ 150k HH points for $3k spend over 3 months. This was my original plan, so that I could get another "SUB" without opening another card. I thought it'd happen after a year but no offers until now.

Wow lucky I had my card since 2016 but in 2 years only got a upgrade offer but ever since then never got an upgrade offer with bonus... idk how you got it and some people got it being targeted but I feel like amex doesn't like me lol...

I used it once a month all last year for the $5 dining credit each month, and 1 hotel stay. I thought it was routine to get upgrade offers, but I guess you and I prove otherwise. I originally planned to get the no AF version and upgrade after a year, but it ended up taking 2 and a half to get the offer. I refused to open a second card or upgrade without a SUB.

FYI, it came in an email. Even after getting the offer, it didn't show up when requesting an upgrade on the website; I had to make sure I clicked the email link, or look for a place to put in the upgrade offer code. I never found where to input it, but I only glanced once at website quickly, and then decided to just click the email link.

Exactly! I refuse to even cancel just to sign up for the surpass for the bonus. But I did stay at a hotel like last couple of years, idk what happened lol...

I received a similar offer on one of my HHonors CCs. The spend requirement is a little higher than your offer, but still a pretty decent promotion. Mine came via email as well, and in the past, it's displayed online too. I believe this is the 6th time I've received an upgrade incentive since I've had this particular card.

@TheBoondocks - are you even using the card at all? Have you had any hotel stays with the card? If your transactions and/or usage is fairly low and/or not used in a while with any particular stays, then there's really not much of an incentive for AmEx to dangle a carrot for ya 🤷‍♂️

Last year, maybe I stayed at a hotel and I used the card for the monthly dining credit but other than that I don't use it cause the rewards are so low. I thought that the reason why Amex send offers is to entice you to spend, I didn't see it as if I spend regular that it would send me a promo offer. But who knows, for the past 6 years or so after the SUB I never really made purchase. Maybe, once or twice a year just to keep it active.

Not necessarily.

Sure, there's fee income involved by sprucing up a higher AF, but targeted offers are also based on previous history on how AmEx CCs have been used. So, if you collected the initial SUB upon approval then left the card to collect dust and throw it a bone once in a while just to keep it active isn't really going to incentivize AmEx to send an offer your way. Just sayin'

Hey Tslop, how did you do that?? I want to do the same with my Hilton Honors. I opened it Jan 2020. I want to upgrade to Surpass or Aspire and getting SUB but not opening a new card. Am i good now to get the SUB? How do i know which SUB offer do i get offered? I will read the thread but did you do it online or through phone with an agent.

As you may recall @Remedios ... such actions could affect your IRS deduction status causing a greater tax payout in support of our government and further your "empty nest syndrome" so be careful for what you ask

@Deuter - I can't speak for @TSlop's offer, but these are targeted.

My offer shows online or via the email I received. If you didn't receive any targeted SUB offers, then you can still upgrade the card, but it's possible there's no SUB or not the same offer some cardmembers received. You can chat or contact them to see if there are any upgrade offers for your account, but you would definitely know if you receive an email or see it display online.

I think from what @FinStar is saying is spend on the card in hopes of Amex will offer an upgrade. So far, for the past 6 years or so, I have not have success so I know what I did wouldn't help. I have gotten multiple offers to apply for the Gold and Platinum at really huge offers but I don't have the type of spending to do so.

If you go into check for pre-qualified offers while signed in it will show any upgrade offers there as well. I've been offered the Aspire on my Hilton and the Platinum on my Gold pretty regularly.

This is great an all with people receiving sweet upgrade offers, yet for those of us that already have the aspire, is anyone being sent any offers similar to SUBS or are we just left to haggle for retention offers?

You have the option to downgrade and repeat the process again if you wish to continue receiving specific or targeted offers. I've downgraded and upgraded several AENB CCs over the years and they've yielded fruitful opportunities.

@Deuter I got an email from Amex for it. First one came for the Aspire, and then a few days later the Surpass. I haven't recently checked the pre-qualified offers section, so I don't know if it was also there. However, when browsing the cards, when clicking upgrade on the Surpass, the offer was not there. The email provided an offer code, so maybe I could have typed it in while upgrading. But I chose to just click the upgrade link in the email.

As mentioned, I waited about 2.5 years for an offer. I thought it would have come after having the original card for a year, but it did not. Also, I do not put much spend on it. Last year I had one transaction a month to satisfy the $5 dining credit on $5+ purchase, and 1 hotel stay in August. I'd also use it for organic Amex offers but that wasn't very often.
