Be Sure To Check Your Accounts Guys!!

Hey Everyone

Last night, DW got a text from Chase, saying that they had declined a charge due to potential fraudulent activity. We called them and confirmed the charge was fraudulent - There were 43 attempted charges on her account yesterday!!!!!! - Grub Hub, Footlocker and many more

I set up text message purchase alerts on all of my cards. It's a valuable feature for detecting fraud. It also reduces the need to check accounts frequently.

I agree with the text alerts. I am dealing with outright identity theft now that was stopped before too much damage thanks to text alerts.

I got one from Discover that they attempted a $1200 charge on line. I immediately called Discover and they denied the charge, closed the card and issued a new one. Within a few days I got notified by Marriott Bonvoy they had raided my loyalty account for all the points. Marriott still has not fixed it after calling their useless overseas customer service mutiple times and spending over an hour on hold. I have filed the FACTA, filed a police report, and put fraud alerts/frozen all bureaus.

Now I have an alert the person created a new identity using my name/social security number, different DOB, new zip code on the other side of the country and new phone number. I will have to be on top of this for YEARS and more than likely the cops will do nothing.

With all the recent data breaches EVERYONE should have their reports frozen. This isn't going to stop.

Glad Chase was on top of this with a quickness and alerted her quickly so she could be proactive in other areas. I'd even disable debit cards if at all possible or at least leave minimal amt. of money in accts. linked to debit cards. That money is harder to get back....or it's tied up longer than you'd like with certain FI's.

This. Especially as it is now free in all states (since Sep 2018. https://www.valuepenguin.com/states-where-freezing-your-credit-will-cost-you-most shows some previous costs, despite the claim it was updated in 2021!) And as an additional plus for MyFico, you have to do the unfreeze step, which MIGHT slow down, a little, "might as well" apping!

Any debit cards in my household are tied to an account that has limited funds in it specifically for debit purchases. The account is tied to primary checking and savings so funds can be transfered in for larger purchases, but in general only a few hundred are kept in those accounts. Want to make a purchase? Tranfer funds first.

Completely agree on the hassle of recouping stolen funds once it's gone from a checking/savings account. That's why credit cards are the go-to around here for all purchases where they can be used. I like the protection.

Funny you mention this. I checked my Penfed Gold account Tuesday and noticed someone had been using my card for Amazon. I had a $100 that had posted and then almost $300 in other charges pending. Account closed and card re-issued. Just waiting for the refund on the charges at this point. Fraud seems to be at an all time high and it's frustrating, but thank God for credit card companies willingness to help get these issues resolved and quickly.

Yup, always do. It can be a hassle but worth the peace of mind

Bingo, that and the cashback are why we pay everything we can with a credit card. Even small amounts.

I was checking one of my credit cards online accounts late yesterday and noticed a couple of pending charges from companies I never heard of. The transaction amount was $0.00. Then I got an alert for another transaction for $0.10 that my bank declined. Then another declined transaction for $64. Then another alert for a transaction of $0.00. I called my CCC first thing this morning and cancelled the card. They will issue a new one.

These are test transactions to see if the account is active as a prelude to higher charges to steal from me and/or the bank. We nipped it in the bud and I owe nothing. Just a warning out there to everyone to keep an eye out on your card's activity. I don't know if it was one entity or multiple entities that were trying to charge me since fraudsters can set up multiple fakes to attack an account.

Glad you caught, but surprised your CCC was quick to close the account and everything. Oftentimes they force you to wait for the fraudulent charges to actually post before closing a card.

They also tried to call me as soon as they recognized the issue (I was indisposed...). That's why I called them back ASAP. We talked about the charges and I was able to confirm they were bogus. Like most CCCs, they have systems and software to flag bogus charges. The fact that it was M/C World Elite card might have given me slightly better protection and attention from the CCC.

Banks are on very high alert which is good at this time. I tried to purchase an Oculus2 online the other day and my cc was rejected. Immediate text from BofA with a yes/no quiz. I answered yes and was able to make the purchase. Can't remember my last denial of purchase...

Just got three texts for charges on a PNC account I closed last year lol.

PNC declined them obviously.

I seem to get one of my credit cards with fraud at least once a month. My info has been breached from so many companies that its all on the dark web as I get alerts telling me so every month.

My reports as well as wifes and kids are always locked.

Got an alert from Discover that they had declined a $130.31 charge from Amazon Prime Pmts (which I assume is for some Amazon Prime subscription, including Prime itself). Neither my US or UK prime goes to Discover, so not me....

One surprise is that they said I can continue to use the card in a chip reader in a store until the new card arrives. Guess that makes sense since I still have the physical card, but I was expecting immediate cancellation, like other issuers

Interesting to note that I've had several more attempts of bogus charges (between $200 to $600) but they were denied. The card was closed and a new card will be sent to me in a couple of days. They are starting use common names like Bell and PizzaHut... as well as a bunch of obscure names. I expect they will continue to try for a while.

Due to several breaches and identify theft issues in the past few years, not sure whether SSN would be eventually a "secure" number further. It is likely to keep fraud alerts and locks/freezes FOREVER. The damage might happen several years later.
