Amex Limit Reallocation - 7-10 Days

Just opened an Amex Marriott Brilliant card and recieved it today. The limit was lower than what I wanted to I used chat to request a limit reallocation from another card. He processed everything then said that it was submitted and they will let me know in 7-10 days. I asked him if that meant it was being denied, because 7-10 days from Amex means no. He said it doesn't mean that, that every request needs to go through the accounts team. I am assuming it is a denial, but not sure why. Ironically, the request shows up in the my application status page as In Progress.

Anyone have a 7-10 day message for a limit reallocation recently that wasnt a denial? Any idea why it wouldnt be approved. I haven't submitted a request in the last 30 days (not sure if ever, and my account is 11 years old). Could it be because the recieving card is brand new? Not sure. Thanks!

If the limits do not change or get reallocated within the next 48-72 hours (at most 5 days), then the request was not approved. There can be any number of reasons for this. So, if denied, the letter will likely provide some insight on that.

So there is still a chance it's approved? Guess we'll see what happens. Not holding my breath.

That is unusual for reallocations. I've reallocated limits with Amex three times, and every time it was immediate. I suppose it's not a GUARANTEE that it was denied, but it doesn't sound likely. You can always try again in the near future though. Amex is good about this stuff.

Potentially. So, just monitor things periodically to see if the limits change.

A couple things that I've seen reported are: (1) if a cardmember defaulted on previous AmEx accounts, and while a relationship was able to be re-established, the system will detect prior negative history and will not reallocate or CLI current accounts b/c of the past history. Or, (2) account hasn't been active in the system long enough to swap limits. It really depends on what the system can or cannot do.

With that being said, hopefully just a glitch, but definitely update your thread with the outcome.

Could the reallocation request amount result in the donor card being reduced to less than the minimum credit limit? Some Amex cards can be kept open with just a $500 limit, but other cards require $1000 or more.

No, the system will display if the request cannot be completed until the amounts are adjusted. Agents will see the same message when a threshold minimum is required.

Thanks FinStar. I wasn't sure if the agents would have access to that info. A few years ago, I tried an online reallocation request that said I had to leave a minimum of $500 on the donor account. I got the 7-10 day written response that told me the request was not approved because the minimum credit limit for that product was actually $1000.

I've seen a few mentions here of people trying to reallocate and being denied for the limit being left on the donor card too low on some cards. That does seem to be a legitimate "bug" when the boxes let you leave smaller amounts.

7-10 days is more likely than not to be a denial as they are usually instant when eligible and granted. If it's because not enough was left on the donor card, no reset should happen so you should be able to ask again for a reduced amount if that ended up being the case.

I have done this once so far, and plan on doing this again this summer. From what I was told when on the phone with a CSR, you must keep $1,000 on the donor card, and they don't like to "guarantee" all requests are honored.

Same thing happened to me. I was told I needed to leave $1,000 on the donor card. I requested a move, got the same message you did and was denied. Called back and they told me I was already at the lowest limit for my card and I can't move anything. It was a delta platinum with $1,700. Later I got a 3x CLI on marriott bonvoy to $18,600, I moved $4,000 to another card and it was immediate.
