I received a letter in the mail inviting me to upgrade my card and stating I'd get the $150 after spending $1000. I don't use the BCE a whole lot. I use it at supermarkets, but we shop for our groceries at Walmart since the prices come out better. Publix is pretty big in this area.

I know some people have been able to get the supermarket category on BCP by shopping at Walmart neighborhood markets, but it seems like that may have stopped working a few months back. To make up for the $95 annual fee, I'd have to spend $3167 a year (for the 3% -> 6% to be worth it).

I'd much rather use the BCP than the Walmart card from Cap1... but we also like going to the super center since they have a lot more options as well as non grocery products all in one store.

Does anyone have a perspective I haven't considered? Does BCP work well with their Walmart+ delivery thing?

Your math is wrong. That $150 switching bonus COVERS the $95 AF and then some. In addition to that you're doubling your Cashback for a year for what you do spend at the grocery stores... Just make sure to hit that initial 1k spend. Just downgrade again after a year (if you do it within a month of the renewal charge you'll get the AF back).

If in the meantime you found that changing your spending habits worked well, you can stick with the BCP. But the upgrade/downgrade is done regularly by some MFers.

Also, is the AF waived the first year? That has often been the case with the $150 upgrade. There is also a $250 upgrade where the AF isn't waived.

Opinions will vary, but for $150 with the AF (so clearing $55 and getting double on supermarkets) I might not bother, as having to remember to cancel and meet the spend etc isn't worth the gain.

But the upgrade just made financial sense - you'll get double the reward points (3% to 6%) that your leaving out of the equation, and that helps "equalize" any price difference. And do the other grocery chains in your area have membership "club specials". Safeway has weekly club price specials, and those are often as low or even cheaper than Walmart on those items. Can make your grocery shopping a bit more complicated, but Safeway has an app for my phone and I use that for my shopping list there.

Does BCP work well with their Walmart+ delivery thing?

Since others have already pointed out that you're doing the math wrong, I'll skip that. I basically want to touch on the Walmart+ thing in tandem with the BCP.

I got an upgrade offer last year (with a nicer SUB than yours!) and I took it. At some point right before the pandemic, I signed up for Walmart+ because my Cap1 WMR card sent me a special offer--a free trial of W+ along with ongoing 5% CB for all purchases at walmart.com. Since I only shop online anyway, and since I've been grocery shopping online since the '90s, I figured this would work out great! I was wrong....

W+ was the *worst* grocery program I've ever used. I could literally write a book about its faults, but I'll sum it up like this: they didn't have a useful 'substitution preferences' feature (they were tweaking that at the time--maybe it's better now), their shoppers did a terrible job of picking substitutions--and I mean things like bringing MEAT and DAIRY into this VEGAN household! There were almost always errors, with missing items, wrong items, bad subs, poor quality/freshness produce, very limited selection of the type of edible groceries I buy, and so on. Then, to top it all off, they didn't have bags--and they'd deliver the groceries by placing them, loose, all over my front porch! *SMH*

I had purchased the W+ plan before the free 30 day trial ran out--because I didn't know then just how awful it would be. By the time it auto-renewed a year later, I was done. I canceled it and had them give me a pro-rated refund, instead of what they normally do, i.e., keep the account active until its expiration date.

I don't remember when I got my Instacart Express account, but I'd used IC long before the pandemic started. I do know that after the WM catastrophe I started using IC along with my BCP to shop for groceries. With this method, I *can* shop at WM--and Amex counts it as groceries, because IC is the merchant, not WM--so I get my 6% CB, plus I can do my food shopping where I prefer, e.g., Sprouts and Whole Foods. I use WM for household products because they definitely have the best prices. IC is much, much better about....EVERYTHING! They get the order right, they have a GREAT substitution preference feature, the shoppers generally follow instructions, and I don't end up banging my head on the wall out of frustration over yet another screwed-up order.

As with everything else in life, YMMV.

Don't forget the 6% CB for any streaming as well. Put all streaming recurring on BCP, it all adds up, BCP is a great card.

I don't like walmart groceries so not sure on that part, I'm more of a Publix BOGO junky. I figured they're the biggest retailer on earth (or something similar), so they MUST have great groceries, right? Wrong! Horrible selection, especially if you're vegan/vegetarian or otherwise just picky about what you eat.

As for IC delivery fees, there are none if you're an IC Express member. To me, it's well worth the AF--and I'm speaking as someone who's ordered groceries online since the mid-1990s. I remember the good old days of free delivery for $X minimum purchase. I never, ever paid for delivery until very recently. I mean, I pay via AF, but that's still paying, you know? But IC's AF easily makes up for per-delivery delivery fees.

@unsungivy wrote:

I appreciate the response! If I were to get an annual fee card, I wouldn't want to get it with the plan to downgrade it after a year, though I suppose that would net the most bonus money (unless the increased cash back each year is a good amount).

Your mention of the tactic of upgrading to then downgrade is valuable and is exactly the sort of information I was looking for. It definitely adds something to consider.

I don't think it's correct to say that my math is wrong just because I focused it on different factors. The SUB is great, but I was thinking about how much I'd have to spend annually to make up for the $95 fee each year. I could've done my math and included the first year being free as well as the SUB so:

In the first 5 years, the total annual fee is $380

Subtracting the SUB gives $230

To make up for the $230 annual fee over 5 years, I'd have to make $46 in the +3% increase to cash back on groceries (I wouldn't use this card for anything else) which means spending ~$1,533/year on groceries.

I don't like using a SUB as justification for an annual fee. I'm more focused on if the increased rewards outweigh the annual fee to the point where I gain more net cashback than if I just kept using the no annual fee card.

Thanks again for your response.

I did the upgrade to BCP for the $150 bonus for $1k spend last month, and I also buy most of my groceries at Walmart; in my small city there's just Walmart & Safeway grocery chain and Walmart has much better price.

I have the Walmart Credit card so 5% (if I choose pickup/delivery since in store earns 2%) back on their already low prices is better than 6% off more expensive grocery store prices. In my mind, I wouldn't be leaving out that 3% from the equation because I believe Safeway, as an example, is greater than 3% more expensive than Walmart even after considering the specials they have (the special items may end up cheaper, however, everything else is more expensive so I imagine it'd net more expensive). Anyway, the specials would likely cause me to spend more overall because I try to get discounts to justify shopping somewhere more expensive and they'd cause more stress to track/manage.

I appreciate you bringing up the specials though, I might have to look into local grocery stores a little more to see how factoring in the specials make the overall shopping costs compare.

Yeah, I appreciate you sharing your experience with Walmart+. I signed up for the free trial at one point and was about to complete my first order, but then I realized the annual membership fee was separate than the tip you're expected to provide the driver. So basically, I pay an annual fee to be able to use their delivery functionality (they usually hire an Uber driver) which doesn't cost anything and I also pay tips that their delivery service doesn't require (nor do other places like Amazon after having paid their annual membership fee). The only difference is certain grocery items being unavailable, but that can be solved with a pickup order.

I will have to look at InstaCart though which may end up being a nice solution!

However, I concur regarding Instacart, it's great. Back in the day, i.e., prior to the pandemic, I had been grocery shopping online at Vons for years. There was no such thing as a paid membership like everyone has now. Instead, they had a flat fee, I think $9.95 or so, BUT it was waived if your order reached a certain dollar threshold, e.g., spend $100 and get free delivery. I ordered about twice a month, easily met the free delivery requirement and--here's the clincher--they didn't ALLOW their drivers to accept tips!! And they were AWESOME people, several of whom I got to know really well. They would come to my side (kitchen) door, ring the doorbell and walk right in. They'd put all the groceries in a logical place, i.e., frozen foods nearest to the refrigerator, cat litter in the room next to the kitchen, canned/dry products near the cupboards, etc. Gosh, they even changed a light bulb for me once that I couldn't reach! It was amazing...

Everything's different now. Oh well. Times change. Tipping is absolutely the biggest downside of today's online grocery shopping. I feel guilty if I don't give the person a nice tip--but with the pandemic-induced shortage of products, it's gotten to a point where I HAVE to order frequently just to keep everyday products on hand. When you're ordering 2-3 times per week, and every time you feel compelled to give the driver a nice tip, well, it adds up! Fee or no fee. So, yeah, there is that.

I think you'll be happy if you give IC a try, especially if you have a BCP (or other card with a nice CB % for groceries). Since IC codes as groceries, Amex pays the full 6% CB on each IC order--and that adds up, too! Also, IC is currently offering its members a free year of GrubHub membership, which I'm using right now. I like it, and had used GH before, but their fees--without delivery fees in the picture--are ridiculous, so I don't use it a lot.

Gig pricing makes little sense to me. It seems like Uber restaurant delivery drivers do less work than IC drivers (equal driving but without the walking, searching, and examining) but make much more? At least, based on most people seeming to tip 10% to 15% on IC grocery spend.

I tend to give a good initial tip and leave it at that. But that seems to have no effect on whether I get great or terrible service. Maybe I should just start with a medium tip and add some oft-abused line about tipping well for great service?

Walmart+ has some value for free fast shipping on small orders. That said, it's saved me maybe $10 or $15 in shipping costs while I've paid ~$100 in membership fees (all reimbursed by Amex as a Platinum perk). No way I'd pay for it otherwise.

In general, a lot of delivery services got built out with cheap pricing, all while planning to jack up prices once customers got used to the convenience.

I'll use the GH monthly credit on Gold, but definitely dislike all the confusion surrounding restaurant pricing. Different prices on a third-party app vs. ordering directly, then service fees on takeout (separate from a tip) and the like...even if I use that restaurant's own app.

I've gone back to mostly just shopping at Costco myself and cooking.
