Help With GAS CARD!

Started a new job; will be spending $1,000-$1,800 per WEEK in fuel; Regular Unleaded. Trying to lower the costs and burden as much as possible. So you if you all could help suggest the very Fuel or Credit Card(s)? ALSO open to any other suggestion's; rewards programs, or whatever. Combinations would be great too!

Don't own a gas card but I save on fuel by using Upside and Exxon/Mobil Rewards. You can even use them together to save even more.

Yeah me and half my co-workers we all been using upside for over a year now, upside in combination with apple or discover makes great cash back to help with the fueling expense. i claimed a 10cent person gallon cash back earlier on it when filling my tank with about $60 dollar worth of gas(filled). However, i know a few co-workers who have gas card that offer a higher precentage cash back. so YMMV.

you could always go electric if possible lol

Upside works by giving cashback on your gas purchases. Let's say gas is $5.15/gal and it'll say something like $.15/gal cashback. So if you fill up 20 gallons, you'll get $3.00 back, meaning you paid $5.00/gal. Once you reach $10 in cashback, you can redeem it for gift cards from Amazon, Walmart, Target, Starbucks (dozens of others), Paypal or bank account. I also use Exxon/Mobil rewards for more savings, I currently have $.10/gal discount offer.

There's a few decent options for gas rewards credit cards that I know of. Citi Custom Cash would give you 5% back on your gas purchases if you keep fuel as your top purchase category with the card (or just only use that card for fuel). I believe the PenFed Platinum Rewards card does 5% on gas, and Costco does 4% on gas but I'm not sure if they count every brand of gas station. Discover does 5% back on gas for 3 months every year, and they match all your rewards in your first year which means you effectively get 10% on gas for 3 months.

@RonelTheGeek I definitely would LOVE to go electric. But I drive 3,000-5,000 miles per week. No electric car would be even remotely capable. Lol

Plus I haul thing's for a living. So I have to have a truck. Making 8-12 mpg when hauling. 😂

@PNWRambler I absolutely wanted that Citi card! Until I saw it's limited to like $500-$2,000 in spend. I guess per month. I did notice AMEX has a 3% (on fuel) CB Card--from what I can tell it's truly unlimited!!! The $95 AF would be well worth it! Is it hard to qualify for? I have an AMEX; but it's only a $1,000 card and WON'T GROW! Lol

Exxon/Mobil Smart card currently offers $.40/gal off but only for first 2 months. Or join Costco and get gas there, which are .30 to .50 cheaper. Plus Costco gas is Top Tier now.

Fuel savings can come in many flavors.

If you have ExxonMobil stations near you and they aren't marked up drastically above the other stations, the ExxonMobil Smart card saves you $0.10 a gallon on regular unleaded.

Sinclair also offers a gas card that gives you $0.10 a gallon off at the pump when used to buy fuel at Sinclair and Stinker stations.

Citi also issues the Shell gas card, which the Mastercard version allows you ways to earn Fuel discounts. Buying snacks in store, buying your groceries all are ways to get more off your gas.

Synchrony issues the Chevron card, it offers between $0.03 and $0.25 a gallon in rebates.

Synchrony also issues the Conoco/Phillips66/76 card, it offers rebates for using the card, and some stations also offer a cash price using that card on top of the $0.03 rebate.

Bank of America offers a card that gives you 3% cash back for purchases in select categories including Gas (can only pick one category per month).

As mentioned up thread Costco card is 4% cash back, but is issued only once a year as a check that can only be redeemed at Costco (card doesn't make much sense if you don't shop there).

US Bank Cash+ let's you pick 2 - 5% categories (cell phone, power company) and 1 - 2% category (gas, groceries) every three months. Rebate is available for deposit or put towards you bill every month.

Others have mentioned many other good options, just thought I'd toss a few out that may or may-not make sense in your situation.

Abound Federal Credit Union has a card that offers an uncapped 5% off all pay-at-the-pump gas purchases.

Problem is that it is pretty restrictive as to who can join.

One option is the US Bank Altitude Reserve. It gives you 3x points on all mobile payments which most gas stations accept now. If you redeem the points on travel, it's worth 4.5%. But it's uncapped.

Don't forget good old fashioned shopping around. If all of the surrounding name brand stations in my area gave me 15c off per gallon, I'd still be better off going to Excaliber.

Please do not use cheap no-name gas unless you drive a beater. Damaging your engine isn't worth saving a few cents. Stick with Top Tier gas only.

The PNC Cash Rewards card is a great card - especially for gas! It rewards $8k / year combined spend on gas (4%) + dining (3%) + groceries (2%). But one could choose to use PNC Cash Rewards card exclusively for gas 4% only! I like yearly caps better than quarterly or montly caps, such as trying to not go over $500 / month spend using Citi Custom Cash - to max out 5% back on primary category. But I guess that shouldn't be too hard now for me - just count four gas fill ups ought to do it!

I do mostly drive my daily beater but I disagree that off-brand gas is damaging. (And it's not just 'a few cents'). Yes, I know the debate will continue.
