Can an Amex AU apply for the same card as primary?

Not worried about credit approval etc. just specific AMEX question. My wife and I have a BCP for grocery rewards, I have her as AU so we could both have one to swipe and get the 6%. The 6% is only on the first 6K. I usually can manage around some other card/quarterly categories such that we don't hit the 6K cap until close to year end. This year we have hit it in July. The gold isn't that lucrative for our lineup and use case, the BCP is really ideal. So my thought was to have her get her own BCP and new 6K limit (and whatever signup they have right now.) She already has a Amex Marriott and Delta Plat in her name.

Do I need to remove her as AU on my BCP before she applies? If so do I need to wait?

Is there better way to maximize 1K/mo at kroger when I already have really good options for dining/travel/gas? (I have investigated the Amex Gold and it is not great for us.)

Yes, AU's can apply for their own BCP card. It is a valid strategy for maximizing grocery rewards. There is no need to remove the AU status before applying.
