Cash Back Cards with Cell Phone Protection

I have a couple of related questions that hopefully myFICOers can help me out with. First, as indicated by the title, I am wondering if there are any 2% for everything cards, beyond the Wells Fargo Active Cash and maybe its predecessor, that offer cell phone protection. Beyond that, which cash back cards, in general, offer cell phone protection of more than $250 per claim other than those provided below? I know this topic has been previously discussed, though I don't know how much recently. Regardless, if you would prefer, alternatively, what source could I rely on for a relatively comprehensive list? As always, thanks so much for the help.

@cws-21 Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU) offers a 2% cash back on everything Mastercard. Unfortunately though, I do not believe the card offers cell phone protection.

Thanks, @Anonymous. The Fifth Third Preferred Cash/Back Card also offers a 2% cash back for everything Mastercard, with cellphone protection, but it is "exclusively for Preferred Banking clients," which is not me.

The Capital One Venture X has great cellphone coverage and gives to 2% back on Travel. It has a lot of other nice benefits too but it also has a $395 AF.

Thanks, @Hex, but I am only interested in cash back cards at this time, though things may change in the future.

The Venture X is a miles card but you can redeem the miles 1 to 1 for a cashback statement credit so long as you have made enough purchases in the travel category to cover it. I paid for a FedEx dilivery upgrade and it coded as travel. I moved and the movers coded as travel. I've only every used my miles from this card to get cashback.

@Hex, unless I am misunderstanding, the Venture X seems like an expensive card if mostly used for cash back.

SDFCU Premium Cashback Plus is 2% with $250 of cell phone protection. Amex Delta Platinum Business offers $800 per claim. I think CSR and a few other Chase cards offer more than $250 per claim, too.

I never could find a card that offered more than 2% cash back for paying cell phone and also had cell phone insurance. I use the Amex Delta Platinum myself. I've used it a few times already since my kids phones are on my plan...

Thank you for the post, @digitek. I have the Affinity Cash Rewards that offers $250 of cellphone protection, which isn't much these days. At least some of the Elan Max Cash Preferred Mastercards offered cellphone protection and 5% cash back on cellphone bills, but some (or all?) have removed the cellphone protection.

My guess is that it is all, as the protections (and really all aspects of the card) come from Elan and not the individual FIs. But would be glad to hear of anyone with a MaxCash MC that didn't receive a notice in Oct-Nov 2021 ending the benefit starting Jan 2022.

You're probably right. I thought that would be the case, which is why I took it off my wish list.

The First National Bank of Texas Elan MasterCard still offers cell phone protection. However, around the time others nerfed cell phone protection, they started requiring you had to have an existing FNBT login to apply for the card. When we got it, we were able to login directly through Elan's page for the card, but that is not the case now.

I'm assuming FBNT is geofenced, but I don't know that. I'm not sure what it would take to have a banking relationship with them to be able to apply for the card.

BMO Harris provides $400 cell phone coverage with their Mastercards.

The Freedom Flex offers cell phone protection I believe. $800 per claim, $50 deductable. It's a 5% rotator though, not a 2% all card.

The USB Visa Platinum has protection but no rewards, boo. $600 per claim, $25 deductable.

I think all First Citizens cards have protection. $500/$50 deductable. They have a Rewards Card (1 - 3 points) and a Cash Rewards card (1.5%).

Deserve EDU MasterCard. $600/$25. Only 1%.

Bilt World Elite. $800/$25. 1 - 3 points, including 1 pt for rent.

FNBO business cards. $600/$50. 2%!

Dillard's Rewards Amex. $600/$25. 1 - 2 points, used for merchandise.

BMW MC. $800/$50. 1 - 4 points.

SoFi MC. $800/$50. 2% when used for investing/saving.

Wells Fargo Active Cash $600.

Get up to $600 of protection against damage or theft when you pay your monthly cell phone bill with your eligible Wells Fargo card (subject to a $25 deductible).

Keep in mind a few important considerations:

1. Whether the benefit covers loss or just theft/damage

2. How much effort the claims process involves

3. In the case of lightly cracked screens, any language excluding coverage of "cosmetic damage"

4. Card rewards or credits

Personally, I use Amex Business Platinum...not that it's a viable option for most people or in the guidelines of the topic.
