This is the second time AOD froze my account for attempting a purchase at CardCash

This is kind of frustrating. Several months ago, I was checking out at cardcash.com and trying to pay with my AOD card when I got a notice at checkout about fraud being detected. At that time, I switched to a different card (teared up a little at only getting 1% CB instead of 3%) and moved on. I actually had no idea AOD locked the card. They never alerted me. The way we found out was when the kids asked why Netflix is not working. We missed our auto payment! I called AOD and I thought everything was straightened out.

Well, the other night, I went to make another CardCash purchase and, lo and behold, fraud detected! Again, no communication from AOD that the account was frozen. But this time I suspected it very well could be. Yup - the next morning I got a text from Metro/T-Mobile saying my auto pay did not go through. Arrgghhh. I called AOD, straightened it out, and I was told that I shouldn't have a problem with CardCash purchases in the future. Fingers crossed.

Why the account freeze? How about a text or an e-mail, even a phone call, asking if the purchase was being made by me? And what is it with CardCash that AOD doesn't like?? I've received plenty of "Was that you?" e-mails over the years from different credit cards but very rarely an actual freeze. I remember one time, many years ago, young and dumb, I was buying the same exact Christmas gift for multiple people and I wanted separate receipts so, yup, after about 3 or 4 purchases, the card stopped working. Doh. But that makes sense! However, a single (attempted) purchase at CardCash freezes my card? AOD obviously does that for their protection, not for the customer's benefit.

I don't want to complain too much over this inconvenience, especially when I am lucky to have this card, but it just seems there is room for improvement in how AOD handles "detected fraud".

Anybody else have any stories of 'premature' card lock or similar, either AOD or other?

AOD has locked my wife's card 7 times after her using it at AliExpress. She just stopped using it there since obviously their algorithm is going to flag it every single time despite her being told it was fixed.

They sent her no notifications either.

Have has issues with Amex, Chase, Bank of West and BOA,

Just returned from a few weeks traveling, used the AOD for almost everything, every day, everywhere, no issue.

Amex? I've never had a problem with them ever, including a $15k purchase from Singapore over the internet.

Well, have to add my normal plug for Citizens then! Supply wrong name on card. No problem. New foreign ship to address? No problem. Billing address with US street address but UK postcode instead of US Zip. Good enough for us!

Maybe my new goal should be to get Citizens to decline a transaction.

You're making me think I should take them up on the prequal they mailed me. Sounds like a true lifetime card! No matter where I am, or who I am, or even if I am, it has me covered!

I think I would overlook cardcash for getting 3% back at every other thing. I have used AOD for big purchases in excess of 3k at best buy over Internet and got text and email asking if it was me said yep and went through and card worked fine as well afterwards so they do have a method to detect fraud. They likely just have certain sites blocked as I believe they use PSECU or something like that for their card servicing and likely they have sites on their no good list as well as many CU's share things. Just my guess and 2 cents about AOD as have been asked before by text/email so certainly exists.

I was actually surprised the first time when I got an order confirmation page and saw that auto-fill had messed so much up, my first name and my daughter's (different!) last name, my billing address except with her post code. But it worked. My guess is that providing card, exp date and CCV are correct, they approve unless they have (some unknown) reason not to. You would think that might cause a lot of fraud, and it might, but there have been no fraudulent transactions on my card in the 2+ years I have had it. So when SoFI suddenly decides to decline a transaction (despite approving a similar one a week ago) I just switch to CItizens and accept that 0.2% reward reduction (10% I guess) for a card that just works.

Of course, as everything in credit, YMMV, but for me...

AOD has locked on a few occasions for me:

Donating to Ukraine

Funding a bank account

Dell (kept cancelling order so had 3x transactions of same amount)

I think one time I got some sort of automated message I was able to resolve myself, the other times I got a call/voicemail from the CC risk department. Anyway if a transaction locks the card you can tell in the management website, the green "lock card" icon will already be angry red.

AOD locked my card once. I don't remember what it was for but I called the automated line and it was unlocked and ready to go again.
