Right now it is Discover IT because the rotating category is Paypal. Typically my Amazon Prime card gets the most love with spending, though, because I usually order Wholefoods through amazon.

I'm curious. For years amex had the highest purchase volumes and that was one thing they justified the higher fees for.

noticed in 2020 and 2021 Amex was no longer the purchase volume leader. Chase is listed as the leader now.

not that it really matters but I'm curious what chase or Amex has done different if anything at all

My wife and I have cards with 15 different lenders, but these 3 get the majority of our spend:

AmEx

31.24%

NFCU

15.18%

US Bank

12.92%

Stats are for this year, and they're heavily weighted toward AmEx as we've secured 3 signup bonuses, having already earned 90K MR on an AmEx Gold and working toward 90K on a Delta SkyMiles Platinum in my name and a 70K on a Delta SkyMiles Gold in my wife's.

AmEx gets the majority of our spend in the grocery and dining categories, while US Bank gets utilities and cellular, and finally NFCU gets all non-categorized spend.

At this point its my Citi Custom Cash... 3 of them to be exact. 1 dedicated to gas, 1 dedicated to grocery, 1 dedicated to restaurants. Then Citi Double Cash for anything not categoriezed. Cash+ for utility bills and cell phone.

got so ticked with my "point" cards depreciating in value this past year I've sock drawered them altogether in favor of cash back. At least I can spend the rewards on anything I want at this point.

Two of my Amex cards generally wind up with the most spend during a typical month:

- Old Blue Cash

- Amazon Prime

Citi Double Cash winds up in third place unless I am trying to meet minimum spend requirements for a signup bonus.

The rest of my spend gets spread out over the remaining cards.

Really depends on which card has the categories I need most and promotions that may be available. Spread spend over different cards.

Definitely Amex and Chase. Amex was always #1 until 2020, now I'm having a harder time justifying the Platinum however did upgrade my ED to EDP for gas. Now the Freedom Flex is #1 on the personal side with EDP a close 2nd. On the business side I WEAR OUT my Ink Preferred, Amex BBP, and my FNBO Evergreen.

Honorable mention for Disco (utilities on autopay) and NFCU Cash for insurances (auto, life for all family members) Sounds way complex as I write it down but seems pretty easy nowadays. 😉

I think @Anonymous hit on a good point with this topic.....

There are many people out there who benefit greatly from the Amex family, due to work and travel which is what most of their cards are structured for. But which card is getting the most love for most other people is going to depend highly on where their hishest level of organic spending goes, and which cards are offering spend bonuses for specific categories, etc. Usually, (not always, but usually) that's going to be Grocery, Dining, and Utilities. (And I think these days, unfortunately, Gas cards are getting a lot more attention)

General spend (non-category) cards will also usually see a fair amount of use, which is why most of us have one.

For me personally, Amex BCP (grocery), USBank (ultilities) and AODFCU (general spend) rise to the top. We have cut back on our dining in this inflationary period and I've also cut back on unnecessary driving due to gas prices, so those aren't reaching the level of spend they normally would.

For me lately it's been amex gold, cap one spark cash select, and elan/us bank. I rotate those 3.

Haven't been using my amex everyday much lately, wish they would change it to another card but they can't.

I'm considering applying for the amex I want more

I guess mostly for travel, but "biggest spend" can be skewed by one-off purchases. Last year I needed some expensive dental work (OK, facial reconstruction to hide from the authorities who were being a little too persistent) and as my dentist took mobile pay, I used an Altitude Reserve. So for at least that month, the AR had by far the highest spend, whereas another card saw the most transactions.
