CITI Upgrade Offer: Take it or Leave it?

Hey all,

CITI has been relentlessly offering an upgrade from my Double Cash card to the Citi Rewards+ Card. I'm not sure I see the benefits in the product change. The Double Cash card gives me 1 point per $1 spent and 1 point on each $1 paid. I don't see how the Rewards+ Card tops that unless I'm missing something so I'd like to hear some opinions on this.

Take it or leave it?

There isn't one really so I'd leave it. Maybe if they offered the Custom Cash as an upgrade option there would be some food for thought but not this upgrade offer

You might consider the R+ card in addition to the DC card but not instead of.

This. The exception is if you have a huge number of charges that are under $5 each. Rewards+ would give you 10 TYP on these (because it rounds), DC would give you less.

Same here except they want me to move from my Citi Diamond to Rewards+. I get snail mail and emails all the time trying to get me to move. The irony is the reason I don't switch is because for the past couple of years I've been targeted for outstanding offers on the Diamond. This Q3 quarter it was 5% on travel and Q1 was 5% on everything up to $500. Sometimes they skip a quarter with nothing but it still makes it worth keeping.

The Rewards+ is a rather 'meh' card for most things.

@Anonymous is spot-on about it being useful for small transactions due to the round-up, and it's also good for giving you a 10% bonus when you redeem ThankYou points (earned on any card). If you have other cards such as a Double Cash or Custom Cash, once the ThankYou rewards accounts are linked with a Rewards+ the Double Cash becomes 2.22% cash back, and the Custom Cash category becomes 5.55% (effectively).

The other possible reason to get the Rewards+ card is for the sign-up bonus (which doesn't apply here), and it's usually a PC option if you want to downgrade from a card with an annual fee, which is what I did.

If it was me, I would pass on this so-called "upgrade" offer.

Food for thought only if the OP made groceries or dining the top spend category for the Custom Cash, right @simplynoir?.

Food for thought only if the OP made groceries or dining the top spend category for the Custom Cash, right @simplynoir?.

Would depend on what other cards the OP has assuming those categories aren't already covered. Also, the DC card is good for non-category spend so that would have been another consideration if that was on the table

There are multiple data points showing that Citi is now allowing direct Double Cash -> Custom Cash product changes without having to go through the 51 day multiple-PC route. No need to wait for a directed invitation.

Citi has been pestering me as well with this exact offer and I'm not going to bite. I don't buy enough $1.06 ($0.99+$0.07 tax) Cumberland Farms coffees to make this change worthwhile.

I get offers quite a lot to convert my Dividend to Rewards+ and I think Custom Cash and maybe DC. Safe to ignore! Still, all of these are more plausible to me than Cap One constantly offering to upgrade my QuickSilver to Venture One. Yes, there are use cases where that might make sense, but not very many!
