New US Bank Shoppers Rewards Card

Just received email from US Bank asking if I wanted to join the waitlist on their newest card.

6% Cashback on 2 merchants chosen from a list capped at $1500/quarter

3% cashback on two others capped at $1500/quarter

1.5% on everything else with no cap.

I've heard nothing about this on the boards and Google is barren as well... Thought everyone here should know if you're in the market for another card though! =)

So... this is like an upgraded Max Cash Preferred, but at much more specific retailers?

Damnnnn... Target and Walmart on that list as options. They're almost never on lists.

And the 3% categories include utilities and wholesale clubs. Oi.

Yeah this is gonna be a good card.

Usually for all other purchases it is 1%, they up it to 1.5%. The 1500 limit per quarter.....I wish they kept it like cash + with 2000 per quarter but I understand why. Nice card.

This card HAS to have an AF they just haven't mentioned yet. There's no way... right?

I'm mentally comparing it to the BCP (the usual culprit for 6%). With a 6k a year cap on groceries, that comes out the same as the quarterly cap (roughly, since you're likely not spending THAT much in streaming). Groceries+streaming at 6%, gas and transit at 3%, everything else at 1%. For $95 AF.

I don't think that picking specific retailers is really that much more limiting than groceries as a general category, especially for those who shop at Target or Walmart.

I just don't know how they can do it without an AF... but if they can, it's gonna blow the BCP away (for many people).

Not with 1500 limit. If there was no limit I would say annual fee. I wonder if there is a sub involved.

I'm not sure this card is for me, but I like that this does look like a good card for a lot of people, which hopefully means that other banks will need to compete by increasing the benefits of their cards.

Update: if this card includes and annual fee it will pass me by. As a small spender that would kill it for me.

That's a pretty nice list to choose from! Could totally do a sweet Home Depot/Lowes combo, since home improvement is a hard category to find good cards for. Chewy.com (pet food and more site) is a nice surprise to see on there too.

Hopefully the less strict Sister Elan releases a version of this card too!

Interesting. My first thought was this looks like it's designed to compete with the Citi Custom Cash. Either way, as long as there's no AF, this new card will be pretty easy for many of us to justify adding to our collection.

If I'm hopefully doing the math correctly, in comparing Cash+ with the proposed/upcoming US Bank Shoppers Rewards card:

(1) Cash+: maximum available rewards = $400 per year ($2,000 x 0.05 = $100 per quarter x 4 quarters per year)

(2) Shoppers Rewards card: maximum available rewards = $360 per year ($1,500 x 0.06 = $90 per quarter x 4 quarters per year)

In short: you can still make more total cashback per year with Cash+ at 5%, vs. Shoppers Rewards card at 6%?

The Shoppers card is a much better all around card with the 1.5% uncapped cash back everywhere else. Honestly the question should be...

Why not both?

In the same boat. PC'd into a second Cash+ a while back, but haven't really made great use of it. This sounds like a great option for one of them at least.

Also, nice to see another lender combining categories with a 1.5% baseline. Had hopes of that becoming a trend back when Chase added categories to the Freedom Unlimited.
