Credit Card help (3rd card) Everyday use. ***EDIT*** I got the NFCU Flagship!

****EDIT and APPROVAL******

Hello ALL , I bit the bullet and I app'd for the Navy federal Flagship visa. Now how quick can I get it lol jk

I was approved instantly with a 25k limit and 16.49 apr.

Id love to help with any data points needed for reference. Ask me anything that can help others if youd like!

Now since I have this one for our trip (all will be paid off asap). I will need a balance tranfer card then I am done for a while (at least a year).

Which should I look at thats a decent balance transfer card?

Also how long should I wait after this card to try for one? They pulled my TU of course so I am thinking one that pulls another agency. Thanks so much everyone ....NFCU has been good to me it was hard to not go with this this time. I am now at 45k total limit and may stay there. id like to get in with some other good issuers like Chase and Amex.

Hello all!

This forum has been very helpful over the years for me. I come here often for information from the knowledgeable.

****EDIT*****

Ok all thanks so much for everyones help.

I am coming to realize that the most important thing would be a good balance transfer card with at least 15 mo 0% to transfer my balance from my cash rewards to that card to pay off quicker.

For my daily driver I believe I will go with the More rewards card from NFCU as I have a good relationship with them. My top two were the CSP and Amex gold but it doesnt look like I will get those and I dont want a denial. It seems as good as some of the top rewards cards out there.

Is it a bad thing to go after two cards at once in same day? Id like to go ahead with NFCU as its so easy and fast then also get a good balance transfer card to move debt from my existing NFCU card. Then garden for a while as you guys say

Just trying to get us off to a good start.

Question 1: Does NFCU allow debt tranfer to another outside card with no fees? (from Cash rewards) I cannot find any info on this.

Question 2: What would be the best card to tranfer that balance to outide NFCU (not a fan of the NFCU platinum). Amex blue cash everyday looks good but I am open to all! Thanks! Id like to get this done today or tomorrow.

I need some help here.

I need a 3rd card. I cannot decide which to do with.

My current cards are :

NFCU Cash rewards mastercard : $19k limit

Capital one Platinum : $3k limit

I also have an auto loan with NFCU of 10k.

-Credit: All low 700s

-Income: 125k/yr

-Own my own home

In the last year I have had to charge more than I would like to both cards and now at round 35% utilization.

This card will be for our trip to St Barts for our honeymoon so cannot have foriegn charges. After that Id like for my wife and I to use it for daily and paid off each month.

My overall question is (I understand it may be tough without knowing my full profile) what would be the best card for my situation? Id like the option of tranferring balance for at 0% for a time period with good rewards for everyday shopping (Gas , Groceries etc). Any with best intro offer or SUB?

I also have a secondary question pertaining to what card to go with. My wife has vurtually no credit profile. The only thing on hers is her student loans from years ago still being paid.

I sent her a referral for the cap one platinum as its a fairly easy card to get.

Is it better to add her as an authorized user on a better card?

Card I am considering:

-Open to all NFCU cards as I have a good relationship

-Chase Sapphire preferred

-Amex gold

-Amazon Visa

-Any and all recommendations and why you like them are welcome.

I have ran some pre-qualify on Amex Citi and Chase. NOT LOOKING GREAT. None of the cards I was hoping listed.

Amex:

Green Card

Hilton honors surpass

Delta skymiles Platinum

Delta Sky miles Gold

Amex Everyday

Citi:

CITI CUSTOM CASHSM CARD
CITI DIAMOND PREFERRED CARD

CITI DOUBLE CASH CARD

CITI SIMPLICITY CARD

Chase:

None at all and simply said this-

I don't think the Amazon card fits what you're describing at all. If you want a general gas/grocery card, I'd look at either the Navy MoreRewards card ($0 AF; 20k point/$200 SUB for $2k spend in 90 days) or the Amex Blue Cash Preferred ($95 AF; waived first year + $250 SUB after $3k spend in 6 months).

I love the amex rewards but I believe it has a foreign transaction fee which negates use on our honeymoon at first. The NFCU more rewards is on the list for sure. Any idea of SL for this one? I got a 10k SL for my cash rewards with virtually no prior relationship with them a few years ago.

If you want a good travel card that can be used as a daily driver for gas/groceries/dining after your honeymoon then I'd consider the Citi Premier card. Has the $95 annual fee but the current signup bonus of 80k points would offset that quite a bit. No forex fees to worry about and plenty of options to redeem your points for from transfer partners to cash

https://www.citi.com/credit-cards/citi-premier-credit-card

If you haven't been looking for any credit lately, meaning inquiries at low, maybe look at Citi Premier ($95 AF) or the new Autograph card from Wells Fargo. Your wife could do very well to start her credit journey with Discover, noting the first-year double cash-back feature and the long-term value of the 5% rotating categories. I'm not familiar with Cap 1, but I've heard they can be good first cards for everyday spending with the QS; however, you could do better, as suggested, definitely getting a 2% flat rate card. Wells Fargo, Fidelity, Citi, FNBO, and Pay Pal, to name a few. I'm sure a quick search on the forum will yield some good information☺️ Also, if you are a new homeowner, you may want to consider getting home improvement credit card.

Thanks mysunset!

Unfortunately I have an inquiry with NFCU 3 months ago for my current vehicle.

Besides that my home which was 7 months ago. So some pretty big ones. I shouldve absolutely mentioned that. Those may close the door to many out there I am sure.

2 questions if you dont mind:

1. Which Discover whould you recommend for my wife? I am worried she wont qualify for much out there honestly at this point.

2. Are there specific cards used for home improvement or just those that are good to use for bigger ticket items for home?

Thanks so much!!

So some pretty big ones. I shouldve absolutely mentioned that. You may still want to check the pre-qualify tool..if available for the cards you are considering...its not a 100% given that your inquiries will knock you out of the running for a new card. Lots of factors are considered. Those may close the door to many out there I am sure.

2 questions if you dont mind:

1. Which Discover whould you recommend for my wife? I am worried she wont qualify for much out there honestly at this point. I think you can check the pre qualify tool on the site..Discover IT is my recommendation. If her file is too thin, I think their secured card has some good reviews and graduates rather quickly..

2. Are there specific cards used for home improvement or just those that are good to use for bigger ticket items for home? I'm a huge fan of the Lowes Advantage card...CL grows quickly, 5% back everyday and 0% financing promotions that can make big ticket items easier to manage.

Thanks so much!!

@Patp05 my responses are in bold

I come here often for information from the knowledgeable.

I agree with @simplynoir that the Citi Premier is a good travel card for you because when you're not traveling it's got good cash back rewards and has a great signup bonus, but with one caveat: it's not good for rental cars because it doesn't provide rental car insurance.

Thank you! Is this their best card? I went with the cash rewards because I read on here that it was a good first card with them and healthy starting limit. I was approved for 10k then after 3 months went up to 19k. Is the flagship similar with healthy starting limits?

A couple tips on about your DW:

Most importantly, she needs her own cards. A lot of women find themselves in a difficult situation when something happens, and in those already difficult times they find themselves unable to get credit because they relied on their husband's cards and thus have no personal credit history. So even if you add her an authorized user (AU) on one of your cards, she needs her own.

But adding her as an authorized user on one of your cards can help, though that depends on several factors. If you add her as an AU, she inherits the history of that card. Nothing else, just that card. But if there are any lates on that card, it's probably not a good choice. And the biggest thing an AU card does is add age to a profile, so the best AU cards are old. Also, pick a card that typically has a low or no balance, since she'll inherit utilization. Finally, while an AU can boost scores, they don't always help. A lot of lenders discount AUs when calculating their own internal scores, so while it's not a bad thing to do, it's also not a magic bullet. One lender who seems friendly to AUs is Navy Fed, and if you're a member, she should qualify as well. Also, Amex AU cards don't help with age, but it doesn't sound like you have any of their cards.

When I was unscorable 18 months ago, I got a Capital One Platinum. It's not a terrible choice as a first card, but beware they often get bucketed, and their CLs often won't grow. Mine still has a CL of $300, even though my total credit over the last year has grown more than a hundredfold. With her installment loans, she might do better. But if she gets a low CL, a good tactic might be to put significant spend on the card every month (30% or higher), and maybe let the statement close with that balance. Cap1 likes to see high spend, and there are reports that closing with a balance helps with credit line increases. While reporting a significant balance will depress her credit scores, utilization has no memory, so her scores will bounce back if she switches to paying off all charges before the statement closes. Either way, as long as she pays off the balance before the due date, there will be no interest charges.

Alternately, the Discover suggestion is a good one. Since she does have a credit history, just not a revolving one, she should qualify for the Discover It, and they seem to grow faster. Or a Navy Fed card. Cap1, Discover, and Navy cards all have prequals and no FTFs (though Discover is less accepted outside the US).

Also remember, you can use household income in applications. So add up your and your wife's incomes. As long as you can prove it if needed (W2s, tax returns, etc.), it's fine.

Great information thanks so much!

I totally agree she needs her own card , I think we have settled on the discover it card for a year or so. She did the pre-qualify on C1 and did not get any unfortunately. Ill need to take a look with her at her profile to see why. I am guessing late payments on student loans (which I think can get taken off if I am not mistaken).

What card do you recommend for me? I will wait a little while to add her as an AU to my NFCU CR card ones I am below 10%.

This new card Id like a high SL (I know thats a shot in the dark) with good points/cash for everday items like goriceries and gas with maybe some other good perks. Something Id like to option of is transferring balance from NFCU card (0% for 12-15mo) if possible. Really we would like to travel for cheaper if possible and take advantage of money we are already spending monthly. I am tired of hearing from my friends their points paid for their plane tickets haha

One last question and it may be a dumb one. Do these sites (and which do you prefer to use) that have the pre-qualify feature hurt me at all? I understand its a SP but they are still doing an iquiry. Thanks again great info!

Thanks again great info!

A hard pull is basically an announcement to all other lenders that you're seeking credit. It's visible to anyone who pulls your report, and affects your score. Soft pulls by contrast are only visible to you. Lenders won't see them when they pull your reports, and they don't affect your scores. But lenders know when they've soft pulled you, and what the results were. When you run a prequal, you are giving the lender access to your credit information. They might factor that in, in the future. But that's similar to the periodic soft pulls all lenders periodically do, after you've become a customer. They're really just watching for red flags that might indicate you're in serious trouble, like maxed out cards. So under normal circumstances, I wouldn't worry about it.
