Amex Keeps Freezing Account

Has anyone on this forum noticed how Amex has been tightening up on user spending lately? I have the personal centurion card and it's been annoying the **** out of me these past couple of weeks. Every time the card reaches a certain balance (around 40k), I'll get a dozen notifications via text, email, or phone call notifying me that they are pausing my spending. It always happens at the most inconvenient of times, and the only solution is to call my banker and have her wire a payment to reactivate the card. Concierge is useless IMO. They say that the account is in perfect condition and that it's because my spending is higher this month (it's the holidays, obviously). Keep in my mind I have no missed or returned payments and that my score hovers around 780. Amex has just been extremely panicky for no specific reason. It's gotten to the point where I'm considering downgrading this card to the Platinum version or closing it altogether. $15k entrance fee and then $5k annually just to get hit with these annoyances. At this card level, I shouldn't have to deal with this. Concierge couldn't even get my niece and her friends floorseats to the Taylor Swift concert. What a joke. Seriously, anyone who's been wanting or considering getting this card - don't.

Obviously NPSL cards are dymanic and go up and down based on spending. Although must admit surprised on a centurion they would be freezing your spending at 40k as to obtain card depending one needs quite a bit of spending/asset initially. Think they would have a bit more comfort than 40k with yourself. Maybe others will have more advise as not many here if any carry the personal centurion that I can think of off hand.

Also curious if you don't mind me asking how do you go from being a full-time college student in 2020 and asking about meeting bonuses to obtaining/carrying a centurion card?

Hey,

There's a guy on youtube that they've done this to twice in the past month. All I can say is that it wouldn't be me.

I"m sure in order to get the card, you had to undergo a thorough process to assess your assets and creditworthiness. If the point of the card is to accommodate your very high monthly spend, they certainly are missing the mark. You get the same lounge access with the Platinum Card.

I'm migrating most of my spend over to chase for the same reason... I'll be using the Chase business Premier for a 2.5% Cash back on purchases of $5000+.

IMHO, the centurian card is basically obtained for bragging rights.. You can spend the same $40,000.00 on a platinum card and save a whole lot of money on Annual fees.

Also, for Centurion holder, $40K should be a peanut in Amex's eye. If you really have one and they are worried about such trivial amount for that particular card, downgrade to Green.

I agree, if you were able to get the Centurion card with impecibable management and then deal with constant unprovoked freezing - I'd want out too! Sucks you're going through this I suspect most institutions are tightening up headed into the new year.

Had to take a double take comparing my $695 Plat fee compared to your hefty entrance+annual fee - I promise to not complain again.

THIS ^^^^. Now I don't have one, but I do have the Platinum and off and on have had it since 1994 when it too was invitation Only like the now Black Card is. But, my dad had the Black card for years until his death. So I know from seeing his that $40K a month is absolutely nothing to concern AmEx on a normal Centurion Card holder so IF you actually have the Card then it is most definitely something on your financial end and not on AmEx.

Also I say IF you have the card because if you do you'd know the Initiation Fee (or "Entrance Fee" as you called it) is only $10,000 and not $15,000 as you stated. But my biggest question is how did you go from a 640 Fico Score and only having one Secured Credit Card in May, 2020 to a 780 Fico Score and the exclusive Centurion Card now in 12/2022?

Actually, it wasn't just one secured cards, there were charge offs while junior in college, with post stating mom and dad do be paying for everything.

OP also asked about manufactured spending because they couldn't meet the SUB organically on Chase business cards. This is typical for Centurion holder, $4000 is a no-go but $40,000 super easy peasy.

They were also posting how the couldn't add AU to Centurion, so when called on that, they miraculously had the invite of their own, without even having an Amex account.

Also, everyone knows when Centurion holder has an issue, they don't reach out to Amex, they post on message board.

However, there is a silver lining in this story, at least a few people (real or otherwise) weren't subjected to Taylor Swift. Just for that, I nominate imaginary concierge for Person Of the Year.

Ummm yeah that'd be nice. Well like said my Pop's "really" had the Card from pretty much it's inception until the day he passed away in 2019 and he knew better than to ever make me an AU on it lol. I'd have made that $40K a month look like chump change if he had'a and he knew it lol
