AMEX green to platinum upgrade or SavorOne to Venture X

Does the CARD act strictly prohibit me from upgrading until 1 year or can AMEX/ C1 bypass that? Will they or is it invite only?

I am a new member for both, 180 days will fall in January/ February. I will be traveling more in 2023 and permanently relocating away from family so I want a card to accumulate more points/ miles. Income 168k, scores on the low end until Fresh Start Program hopefully gives me a little boost.

The Credit CARD Act prohibits an issuer from increasing the annual fee in the first year (NFCU is the only issuer that I am aware of that interprets that as "unless a cardholder has requested the increase"). You would not be able to upgrade until after that point. As the underwriting standards don't typically differ for Amex charge cards, it's possible they may approve you for a Platinum card if you were to apply as you have been approved for Green (although certainly not guaranteed).

Aside from the CARD act...

Generally you can't do Savor family to VentureX upgrades because C1 doesn't upgrade across card types like that (Savors are MC, VX is a Visa Ultimate).

Also AMEX upgrades are usually a terrible idea, you will lose the SUB because the SUB is "once in a lifetime", once you hold the card that is your "once in a lifetime", and the upgrade offer won't be as lucrative as a SUB.

Just for reference @notmyrealname23, Savor and SavorOne cards are also available in Visa versions, especially for those individuals who PC'd and/or were grandfathered before the PC restrictions took place. The same would apply for QS or Venture cards that have been issued by Capital One in both flavors from time to time. Though, as you pointed out, Capital One doesn't currently PC between networks.

Also, there is no Visa Ultimate, it's Visa Infinite.

Amex SUBs for upgrades vs. new accounts are pretty YMMV. Both can change a lot over the course of a year, and both can have good targeted offers.

How much of the travel spend will be airlines vs. hotels?
Do you have, or expect to earn, any airline status?

Have you looked into airport lounge footprints?

Are business cards an option for you?

Amex Green isn't a bad card for general travel and dining.

@Blender, The VX is not an invite only.

There is an area online to see if you have any Offers/Upgrades for your existing C1 cards.

It is unlikely you will be allowed to PC to the Venture family due to the different MC / Visa networks as noted.

With your income, I'd apply when your scores are about 100 points stronger.

I actually should have know this. But yeah good call, I was thinking only about new accounts/ inquiries but youre right itd be a waste

-Mostly all airlines. Wherever I fly is usually to family and back to wherever I'm living. I will probably vacation less in 2023 than I did in 2022 because I'm moving and my gf wont have the kinda schedule to go with me.

- No airline status, I fly whatever I can minus spirit.

- I typically dont get to the airport early and usually only take direct flights, but I guess I would utilize them more if i had access. Ive been with my green card.

-no im in healthcare/ stocks

Hoping it does something in Feb with fresh start. i was planning on staying in the garden til at least september or so, so thats why i considered upgrade vs new app
