Got that one ... plus:

- 15x points gas/grocery/restaurant (min $1200 max 20k points)

- $120 statement credit each month Feb-Apr for $1000 home improvement charges

-10,000 points for $1000 online purchases

I just can't quit this card ... buying a dryer online for $1500 and will end up with $235 cash back (16% back).

I do not know the details. But Citi Sears credit card is a very valuable business. Sears is an very old brand names and a lot cardholders still use this card for daily spends. This is Mastercard and can be used anywhere. And cardholders keep account balance, so Citi can collect interest payment.

If it is alive and makes money, it is valuable to Citi. Same with some of the airline loyalty programs.

I miss the stores.

I'm not sure what sears is anymore.. I guess that I'd like to see them survive, depends. Not for nostalgia or just brand recognition milking though. Too many old companies reduced to little more than a brand and mark selling questionable products for my taste..

Last purchase was at the store's auto repair bay, 2x Diehard AGM batts for my dually. IIRC they have/had a 5 year replacement guarantee.. meaningless now. The batts are still good. I'm not likely to be buying replacements mail order when the time comes. Prior to that, got a scratch and dent fridge on a whim in store, still working great.

Geesh, Citibank has been the card issuer for sears as long as I can remember.

They took over the portfolio in 2003 and immediately converted a subset of cardholders from the store card to a Mastercard.

Here's the big question, when Sears goes to the shopping mall in the sky in a couple years, what happens to all the Sears credit cards?

(I'm assuming any closed loop cards will close and the Sears Mastercard will be converted into some sort of non-Sears Citi Mastercard)

EDIT: I now realize "a couple years" is almost certainly more time than it'll take

There have been speculative comments tossed around the site before and if anybody knows what Citi's contingency is they haven't shared it publicly. I'll worry about it when it happens, until then I'll continue to leverage those promotions that I can meet organically.

Or perhaps Sears will be around as a catalog store for many more years and the cards will stay active--but if that happens it will remain to be seen if Citi keeps the portfolio. Heck--Montgomery Wards is still in business online 20 years after closing all their stores.

If anyone has noticed, this month (Feb '23), in the Shop Your Way app, the usual Mission of 3 grocery or delivery purchases for 3,000 SYW points ($3) has been replaced by one purchase for 5,000 pts ($5). Love it! There are two more 5k Missions but I pretty much only use the SYW app for WalMart so I don't think I will capitalize on them. But I have already met the first 5k Mission with a WM+ order.

Since you mentioned that, I recall thinking my first issue sears card was from within the sears empire during the 1980's.

Actually, technically KMart bought Sears.

Sears was basically the pre-internet version of Amazon, they could have fairly easily been Amazon if they had the foresight to go online.

But it's easy to say this in 2023 when Sears is on life support.

But Sears's biggest problem was their former CEO/landlord/banker Eddie Lampert's schemes to transfer Sears's assets to himself

They were spinning around the bowl well before Eddit Lampert came along, their glory days were already behind them in the early 1990s.

Got this promo in the mail today. For whatever reason Citibank mails me offers, they do not email me.

$500 online spend from activation time through 4/14 earns 4,000 bonus + the normal earned 500 TYP for total of 4500 TYP (9% return if cashed out).

I wasn't going to post mine @coldfusion but I guess I will now that you did. Honestly, I don't care for these on-line spending ones. While 6.67% CB from the offer alone is great, I'd prefer offers that match more closely with my organic spend.
