I Finally Got AA From Synchrony

Dear myFICO Forums,

I never thought it could happen to me... I have long defended Synchrony and may as well have "I have had cards from them for years and have never had anything bad happen, even back when they were GE Money Bank" set as a macro. I was just logging in to check my Synchrony statements and pay the ones with balances, and was flabbergasted to see my Lowe's card limit had been slashed from $35,000 all the way down to $1500. Why would they do this to me?! I used about 7% of the limit for a 24 month 0% promo to make a purchase just a short 49 months ago, and it's only been 25 months since my last payment. Can't they see I really needed this limit?

Being a longtime myFICOer, I did what I know the proper thing is to do in these situations. I ~~called and yelled at the CSR and told them to just close the card~~ clicked two links on the website, entered a request for $35,000 and my annual income, and in seconds my limit was restored back to $35,000. I'm sure I'll be getting a slew of credit monitoring alerts when that $1500 reports and again next month when I get congratulated on my CLI.

TL;DR Lowe's card doesn't seem to like more than 2 years of inactivity. Since the 5% doesn't stack with the 10% military discount, I only use it for larger home purchases that I want 0% for xx months offers on. I should have bought a Pepsi or Delta gift card last year.

So @K-in-Boston got his (unneeded) CL back. But the fact remains that Sync did a CLD, and while k-in-boston let the insult slide, as a fellow Bostonian MyFico, I wasn't going to. So two local Lowes stores burned to the ground.

OK, purists will say it wasn't Lowes, it was Sync. Yes, maybe technically. But Lowes stores are easy to find around here, and the bank is HQ in Stanford CT. Not going that far, even for MyFico honor.

ETA: LTL Bank SVP Legal requires me to add the following statement:

"The post is in no way an admission that employees or officers of the Bank were involved in any activity that might appear to be in violation of any Federal, State or local laws, regulations or codes. The statement merely observed that two stores had sadly been destroyed. You can definitely tell the types that know Sync vs those that know Sync, gotta love it! Had the same thing happen on my Newegg card a year or two back, no big deal at all to have the limit restored.

Just leave the one in Woburn alone. That's my go-to when it isn't worth the drive up to beautiful tax-free (well, tax-free anyway) Salem.

Congrats on your Synchrony CL restoration, @K-in-Boston and thanks for those data points. It's impressive that Synchrony let you go for two years inactivity and then restored the CL when you asked.

Still, stories such as these are one reason I'm inclined to downsize my cards again slowly with some carefully selected ones to keep open. Fewer cards really suit me better and are easier to manage.

I, too, have the everyday 10% military discount so I don't really need a dedicated Lowe's card even though I shop there often. The bigger alure for me is the extra CL padding of up to $35K, more than the discount or special financing. If I got a Synchrony card, this one would be on my short list; it's a great card for the right person. Still, I just don't think I'll go there. For the occassional larger purchases, I've found I have AMEX or Chase offers and Discover often has Home Improvement on their rotation. So the reason I've never gotten this card is that I would probably not really use it much if any.

You had me nervous for a minute I had to go check my $35k limit. Still there!
