A nice surprise from AMEX on referrals

I just referred one of my friends who opened a Gold card. I was happy knowing I get a 30,000 MR bonus for the referral. Today I got an email telling me that because of the referral I will also get 5 additional MR points per dollar spent in grocery stores for 3 months. We have large grocery spend so it will be significant for us. Generally around $3,000 per month . . . so $9,000 over 3 months times the extra 5 points is 45,000 MR points on top of the standard 30,000 referral bonus. Thank you AMEX!!! That referral gave me an extra 75,000 points and my buddy got 90,000 when he meets the initial spend requirement. Pretty generous and the extra grocery bonus was completely unexpected.

Ugh. Three years ago, it was easy to feed myself for approximately $150/month.

Edit: Now, I mostly eat take-out, which costs more. I should cook/prepare food at home more often.

That's wondeful! I wish I had someone to refer, but I cannot think of anyone. That's wild that you spend $3000 each month in groceries. How is that even possible? Do you have a large family?

We entertain a lot and our dogs eat raw, which we buy at the local grocery store for convenience. It adds up quick at today's prices for everything . . .
