One of my oldest cards is a Capital One QS I've had for about 12+ years. I don't remember what it originally was but it was changed to QS a couple years after I had it. The limit has been stuck at $2250 for about 10 years. From what I read it's likely "bucketed". Does that ever change? Since I changed jobs a few years ago and do excessive amounts of travelling, I have an average monthly spend of about $10-12k across all cards and always paid in full just before or after the statement dates. Just for the heck of it, I've been maxing it out and paying off the QS before the due date the past few months to see if that helps. When I asked for a CLI one of the reasons I got back was "Recent use of this account's existing credit line is too low". Am I doing something wrong or is Capital One just a pain?

They're a pain. It's not hopeless, but it's not particularly hopeful, either.

There has been a spate of higher than usual CLIs from Cap1, since the start of the year. But lots of people haven't gotten a CLI, and the DPs are all over the place. We don't really know why Cap1 is generous in some cases and not in others. Even high spend, which has been the most consistent thing Cap1 seems to like, isn't always a requirement.

If you want to push high spend through the card for a while, I did get a $300 > $3300 auto increase a few months back after putting 60%+ spend on my QS for 6 months. But I suspect that bump is more about them than anything I did. Ironically, I got the same ""Recent use of this account's existing credit line is too low" denial less than a week before my auto increase.

There's nothing wrong with trying for a CLI, but I wouldn't invest too much into it, either emotional or financial. If your goal is just higher limits in general, you'll have a better chance applying for a new card, including from Cap1.

I ditched my QSOne just a couple days ago. I had been using it quite a bit and my score had gone up a solid 132 points from when I got it and they rewarded me with a $100.00 CLI lol. Meanwhile, Discover tripled my CL and Amex gave me a Platinum Skymiles with 10k SL.

The decision point came after the past couple weeks CapitalOne had been bugging me daily via emails and notice on my account/app with a pre-approval for a SavorOne; I decided I would give them a chance to make up for the insulting CLI and called to ask for a product change on my QS1 to the SavorOne. Of course they said no. I'm not taking 3 HPs and another AoA hit just to have them probably give some insulting SL. I went ahead and closed that card after I got off the phone—I'm not paying a $39 AF to sock drawer a crap card, especially when actual good companies show they want to work with me lol; though the experience really did drive home the whole bucket thing.

Its a builder card thats bucketed. Been there done that. It did what it was suppose to do. Build your credit file. Just like mine. Be thankful for what it did for you. Out of BK 7yrs ago I had the Plat/QS and QS1. They were closed. Things got better.

That's sort of the funny part, I got the Discover and the QS1 at the same time, last September (that's why closing the QS1 now since the AF is about to come up.) Disco grew, QS1 didn't; my wording wasn't ideal but I am referring specifically to my particular instance of QS1 with hardly any CL (about 2% of my total CL), an AF, and no opportunity for growth.

Back in 12 years ago they did not have that policy.

Many people including myself got very low limit ($600) card from them and gradually received CLIs. For me that card reached 15K+ before I canceled it.

If you use it heavily for 6-12 months you should receive CLI. But then again why you want to? QS is not a great card anymore.
