How did you come to that conclusion?

As to the OP, I had Capital One do this a while back. No idea why as I have never disputed any account with any lender ever in my entire life.

Cap1 took it upon themselves to add a note to one of my accounts that said that the account was "previously in dispute blah blah blah". Very irritating to say the least. Now when I prequal it says they can't qualify me based on previous derogatory account with them. Once again, nothing ever happened. No returned payments, lates, nothing, nada. I closed both accounts in good standing. Which is a shame because I honestly had no beef with them at all. In fact I recommended their Plat card to several people to help them rebuild/establish credit. I will not be doing that in the future now but oh well.

As to how/why this happens honestly I think it's a data entry error on their end and I think that's what you have suffered here. Somebody with an account just 1 or 2 numbers different than yours and some CSR somewhere didn't double check something and now you are stuck with it. Honestly the "dispute" note doesn't have any affect on anything anyway even if it can be annoying knowing it's not supposed to be there.

I'm disputing airline tickets that I charged to my TD Bank Visa. I made the purchase but we can no longer go on the trip (it was a cruise). The airline based overseas. Customer service absolutely sucks. I can never get a person on the phone or through online chat. The prompts keep sending me in circles. My last resort was to call TD to see if they have any suggestions. The rep said "we can dispute it" so that's what I did. I was told it might take a couple of months for me to know the outcome. I don't know if they'll get a response. When I later researched the airline, the negative reviews for the issue I'm having are extensive.

I don't like to carry a balance so I paid off that account. Then they credited me the amount during the dispute. I was surprised to see that note on my account.
