From what I see and read it varies! There is no solid data points. I think Citi has a few bankers drinking after hour playing darts on the outcome of applications! I don't recall seeing anyone recently getting approved for Citi with 10+ inquiries. The general consensus is zero inquiries 6 to 12 months is ideal. My wife was recently approved for a Citi card and she had 3/6, 4/12, 5/24 inquiries 3/12 - 4/24 new accounts. Her Fico 8 scores 730-749.

Wish you luck if you jump!

In my experience Citi has been sensitive to new accounts and inquiries within the last 6 months. When I have asked for a limit increase with 2 or more new accounts or inquiries in a 6 month period it has been denied. When I'm 0/6 they usually say yes. I haven't tried at 1/6 yet. Best wishes to you should you decide to apply!

In my last conversation regarding my CC denial with Citi, they told me that one inquiry can be also too many. It sounds illogical while they told me to be able to increase the approval chance, it is better to have a clean sheet for at least 6 months. I followed whatever they said and I got approved.

Each lender has its own game plans and financial risk models, even they may sound illogical. It is better to see what they want to avoid wasting HP.

you can recon that stuff and still get approved like I did with a CDP and a 5k limit but overall if Citi doesn't like your profile.. youll never grow a card.

I still cant fig out citi's desires. AFter over ten years, closer to 15 of doing the credit game.. citi blows my mind. I have friends that all have moderate to high util in mid 600s and they always get instant approval citi cards.. while I have much larger limits lower util and bigger income.. and they hate my profile. Cant get them to approve me instantly to save my life even with a few Citi accounts paid in full and closed like Shell, CDP. meh Citi. Ima need that Double Cash card at some point.

I just want to chime in that you may even have to wait 12 months. For the longest time, Citi was denying me for "too many new accounts" back in October on a CLI request. I just tried Dec 1 for a CLI It nosw cites too many recent credit inquiries, with Equifax as the source.

I have a total of 5, 2 are less than 1 year old: 4/13/24, 4/9/23, 10/5/22, 6/9/22, 6/8/22. All of the following details are based on my MyEquifax 11/30 pull.

Here is where it gets interesting. The fico score on citi.com says as of 11/21/23 for equifax, which I have no soft pull from Citi/CBNA on or around that date. I got one for "FAIR ISAAC CORPORATION" on 11/20/23. Hints that when Citi shows you your score, it is using fico direct and not giving you scores based on their AR review.

The last Citi AR pull i have is 10/24/23. If we go by this as the last official date, then the inquiries were 6 months and a ~10 days old. I do have a 2nd card (bestbuy citi retail) with an AR date of 11/3/23. But I am trying to get my regular Citi card increased (have not had an increase in 2+ years due to new accounts).

I did just pull a new EQ report today 12/3, and indeed no Citi/CBNA (besides BB) in all of November. So safe to say they are using a report that is over 30 days old. The odd part is "Citi Cards" pulled my report like clock the last week of each month. "CitiBank NA" pulled my report between the 3 times on a different schedule - 4/10/23, 4/14/23, 5/5/23.

So maybe i will get a Christmas CLI. But if i do not, it will hint that 2/12 is too much. But i know back in October, 0/6 and 2/12 was too many.

@JtAlmond wrote:

I applied for the CitiCustom Cash last July. I have a 750ish score oldest credit 3 yrs 7 months AA of C is less than 2 yes. I have 7 active cards.

When I applied for the card I was told to wait 7-10 days for a USPS letter advising me of their decision. On day 8 I brought in a pile of mail. I opened the letter from Citi. They said I was denied because I had too many recent inquiries on my credit report.

i opened another letter from Citi that came in the same day. There was the Custom Cash card which I called in to activate. I pitched the denial letter and have been collecting my 5% using the denied Custom Cash cards these past 5 months. What does it mean when they say your denied because of too many inquiries?? Do they send you the card anyway?? What about inquiries that'll be off my report fairly soon??

Theres a parade of users stating they was denied but did Citi come through for you anyway??

It is interesting that you got both denial and approval letters on the same day . As a person that wasted ~3-4 HPs for multiple Citi cards in the past recent years with only one success to get one of the core Citi cards, I may apply again, if I would have 0/6 of inquiries.

Not true. I have been approved with major banks with 80+ inquiries.
it's profile and income that rules the day.

before chase and the 5/24 rule I had them all!

If a person does not mind about accumulating e.g. 80+ HPs, he or she might go on and apply for any card in the market.

I waited 6 months after my last inquiry and signed in to Citi today.

Was actually prompted on the first screen if I wanted a CLI. (Keeping track that I was denied and knew it had been 6 months?)

In any case, asked for a CLI and was instantly given an increase from $3000 to $4500.
