Is Kay Jewelers a Possibility

Hi All,

I am not writing for myself today but for a friend of mine. He is looking to ask his girlfriend of 2 years to marry him. Right now his credit sits at 590 with no other open tradelines. He has a few baddies but one is set to fall off soon. I have read here that Kay Jewelers gives people credit with these kinds of scores. If he goes into the store to apply-do you guys think he will be approved for anything? Any experience with this?

Oh and dont worry-I have directed him to this site-and given him some tips I have learned on managing credit!

A 590? That's a tough one. I got mine with a score of 620 and I got a $3k limit, but I also had no baddies.

I got Kay and Jared (same day online) with a 590 EQ. My CL is $3000 on each. Also had some baddies that were over 5 years old when I apped, a new Crown Jewelers account with CL of $2500, and BofA secured with $300 CL. Mind you CJ no longer reports, but CJ may have helped my CL of Kay and Jared.

I got a Kay's 3 months after my Ch. 7 BK discharge with an EQ score of about 590.....$2k limit.

if you decide to app for it let me know the results. i'm hovering right around 615-620 ficos and i'mlooking to expand and show different types of credit to build my scores. i was thinking of apping for this but don't want to risk the inquiry.

I got a Kay card almost four years ago with scores around the 580 range. My CL was only $2500, but I never use it. It's good as a builder card, though.

so my app finger got itchy and i decided to try it. this is the response that i got.

Thank you for applying for a Kay Jewelers Credit Account. We were unable to fully process your request for instant credit at this time. We will notify you via US mail of our decision regarding your request for a Kay Jewelers account within 20 business days.

i guess we'll see when i get the mail.

I got the same response and received the card two weeks later. You can always call their backdoor number, stickied at the top of this board, to see if they can give you an answer.

Good luck rebuilding!!! It's a long journey but sooooo worth it!

Just got the card 1 week ago with $1,800CL

I had 2 open TL's with 1 being open less than a month.

1 major baddie from 5 years ago.

I just applied for Kays and Jareds and I got "there is a system error". I have tried three times already and non of them have gone through.

Let's keep things friendly, supportive, respectful, and relevant to the thread topic, please.

High util is one easy way to end up with a FICO at 620 or lower with no baddies. I managed something under 600 quite a while back, simply by maxing out my few cards that I had at the time. Easy-peasy.

kaylord84, what message did you get after you apped? did you get an instant approval or just get a card in the mail one day with all the info? they pulled my eq which was 610 with no recent baddies or lates. i have a co from 03 and 2 lates from last year. i got an email saying they cannot give me an instant decision but i should hear something by mail within 20 days.

I app Monday morning and got an instant approval for a 1400cl. I have read in this forum as well as other cc forums about people receiving the 20 -30 day message and they still got approved. Try calling them. I will keep my fingers crossed good luck.

Wow - that's great! Love weddings!!!

If he has no other open tradelines, he will want to look at getting a bank card or LOC - perhaps secured - as soon as he is able. This will help his scores significantly. So, even if he gets the Kay's card, he will still want to secure a bank card or LOC for FICO scoring; as well as to set up a banking relationship.

And, of course, he knows not to carry a balance but to PIF the Kay's card. (I can hear people throwing things at the computer at this point.) I suppose I'm an oddball, but I asked my DH to please not buy a pricey ring - he didn't - and I love it. It sounds like your friend at this point is not carrying any debt - Kudos to him. It sounds like he is learning the in's and out's of FICOdom - which will serve him and his bride well as they set up family-life. It's too easy to confuse CL's with available cash - a sure way to drop those FICO's even further. Best wishes to your friend - he is lucky to have good friends like you - hope everything goes absolutely perfectly (no matter what ring he buys!)
