Amex spend requirements

I recently apped for a 3x CLI on my BCP and was denied. Admittedly, this was after working on a sub for my VX and the card hadn't had hardly spend on it. I apped for the BCP before I got in the travel on points game so I don't really have a use for the card but either way.

I'm assuming I was denied for the CLI because the card hadn't had any spend on it and I'm carrying a decently large balance on my Blue Business Plus card. Does Amex take into spend on all their cards I own. I'm asking because when I apply for the 3X CLI again, I'm wondering if spend on my gold card will have any bearing on their decision for the BCP.

I haven't noticed that Amex takes spend into account at all for CLI, but it could be a YMMV thing. The large balance you're carrying w/ them could be part of it, tho, depending on what your paydown has looked like.

This would be my guess as well. I haven't asked for a CLI from AMEX in awhile but balance carrying is a big part of it. Spending helps for not being locked out of their SUBs ever since they introduced the prompts letting potential applicants know if they are ineligible before applying

From my own personal experience the past 12 months, I haven't been able to get a cli on my 2 Delta cards and the reason code has been lack of spend in relation to the credit limit for each card. Admittedly, I haven't put near as much spend on either of accounts that I tried to get cli's(compared to 2022). That said, I was still able to open a new card with a 10K limit and get a new green card while being denied cli's on the 2 Delta cards this summer. And I was carrying a hefty 10K plus balance on one of my other cards. Overall UTI was still low when I app'd for the new card.
YMMV but I do think that spend in relation to a individual cards rather than overall card usage can impact the cli request.

I don't think they care about your overall spend. They want to know how much you're spending on the card for which you're seeking a larger limit.
