Amex Platinum PC Yoyo

13 months ago, I gave in to temptation and got an Amex Platinum card. I don't travel much and I only benefit from a few of the coupons in its book, so it's a card that really doesn't make sense for me to hold long term. But they offered a SUB of 125k MR plus 10x on dining for a few months, so I bit.

As soon as the AF posted for year 2, I asked for a retention offer. They didn't offer anything, so I downgraded it to Green. I don't have much use for a Green card either but I decided it was worth the $150 AF to keep the card alive, guessing I would eventually get an upgrade offer. I didn't have to wait long.

Just three weeks later they offered me 100k MR to upgrade it back to platinum. I took it.

Kind of amusing that their formula for determining retention offers is so different than the one for upgrade offers.

$6k in 6 months. I hesitated a bit over that, because it will require me to shift a significant portion of my spend away from cards with better rewards rates than the 1x MR that Platinum earns. But it's still a net benefit, so I went for it.

MR= Membership rewards, or Amex's point system.

SUB = sign up bonus,

Congrats to the Yoyo game. It covers the AF completely.

If they continue this game plan routinely, it might be worth for some non-frequent travelers to join Platinum and its coupon book club. Anyway, despite the SUB, it is a large commitment and there is no clear path to downgrade it to no AF card. Green almost does not have any perk and I personally, prefer to close a card instead of downgrading to Green (I previously closed personal Gold).
